I can't find a torque spec for the pinion yoke nut on a 742 8-3/4.
I know it is 5/8-18 thread, so I guessed 150-170 ft lb. Is it more than that?
Thanks in advance!

Hey are you installing a ring and pinion? lol 240+ ft. lbs. Remember the preload on used is 7-10 inch pounds.

You betcha! Thanks Jim, I put all new bearings in it and the pinion bearing preload on my old Richmond instruction sheet calls for 15-25 inch pounds on new bearings. Too tight? I have 25 inch pounds right now. Seems a little tight to me, but the Ford 8.8 calls for 16-29 inch pounds on new brgs.(Just did one)

You're right. I thought you were using the old bearings. It is 15-25 inch pounds for new. I'd try to get it somewhere in the middle. But it does say 15-25. So you might be good with the 25. Good luck.

hi i am considering setting up my own gears but have never done it. I have considerable experience assembeling and alineing industrial machinery but have never completely done a rear end. does anyone know of any crash course articles or imformational matrial that would help.

hay thanks guys. that shoud do. good info. i thought you actualy measured pinion depth from the center of the axiss. this is better for me cause i have (or axcess to )the tools required.thanks again it will be fun and i get to learn something.
