    Cuts out going up hill.

Make sure the met rod pistons are free to move up & down in their bores. As you load the engine, the piston springs should push the pistons UP so that the thin section [ enrichening ] of the m/rods are in the jets. Could be a broken spring, rare.

    2 barrel to 4 barrel

To answer the original question, changing only the carb from a 2 to 4bbl [ & a 4bbl intake ], I agree with the others about 15-20 hp. Very little if any benefit at the lower end. However, using a high signal carb that has annular pri boosters like the Edel 500 AVS2 would would probably add some...

    My 340 getting 6 mpg

I see the ignorance of Newbomb Turk rises to the top in post #107 like cream rising to the top. Larger main air bleeds will lean the mixture, not richen it. Same dope blames the carb he has on the dyno because he does not have the jetting parts on hand to jet it. It's the carb's fault! As I...

    Hesitation

You have not given much info, to add to above. [1] If it has been a long time since the points have been checked/adjusted, then the ign timing will have retarded due to the points rubbing block wearing. [2] Carb choke adjustment [3] Same deal with the carb if it has a lot of mileage on it. Worn...

    Popping thru carb when starting

This could be many things, but I think more likely electrical [ ign ]. If points ign, check gap. Check dist cap & rotor for cracks, arcing. If elec ign, check p/up air gap. No gap or too big a gap can cause backfires. If the vac adv is used, after high mileage the p/up wires break from constant...

    Coil Question

First, You must test the coil resistance with a DVM the ign off [ no power to the coil ]. If it reads open cct under this condition, then the coil is bad. Touch the meter leads together to make sure the meter goes to zero or close to zero [ meter is working ]. Secondly, you will not get an...

I have a 1965 barracuda it had a transmission with 2 cables and a floor shifter . I changed the transmission to a newer one , what can i do ?

You can use the original shifter [ shift knob is a black ball with s/s inserts { buttons } each side, right? ]. I have done it. I always liked the knife/through/butter feel of that shifter. I used that early cable shifter on TWO cars that had the later linkage shift. It requires some creativity...

Pinion angle for a street cruiser

Having a zero angle will cause rapid U joint wear because there is no relative movement of the U joint components & all the wear is concentrated in one section.

    340 dual point??

I do not know why people still mess with points ign, unless it is a true 100% rest deal. What's next, modifying the front of the engine so it can be started with a crank handle...

What cam to use in a 318

Re-grinding a stock cam to get more lift will leave the lobe physically much smaller..... You may need longer prods. Not the best solution.

rocker shafts installed backwards... long read. but pics!

For a mild engine like this, having the shafts upside down will have no long term problem. It just means on initial start up, the oil now has to fill the shafts to the top so that the oil can exit the shaft holes. This will happen veeeeery quickly as without the holes being at the bottom of the...

What cam to use in a 318

...270 Mega cam. I have used a lot of the Mega cams. The tight 108 LSA is going to give you more HP. 221 @ 050 might not sound that big, but it has 12* more overlap than the same grind on 114*. Single pattern, lift will be 0.496" with 1.6 rockers. Remember, easy to go too big. Have factory...

    My 340 getting 6 mpg

...literally. Have you checked for leaking needle & seats? Correct float level? Those are basics to carb set up. Tuning starts after the correct idle ign timing has been determined & set. If someone advised you to use 10* initial timing, then never take their advice again because they have no clue.

    Initial Torqueflite tear down findings

Burned clutch plates: I would be checking the clutch piston seals to see if they were damaged during installation [ nicks, cuts, rolled over ]...or if they have gone hard. Gone hard could be a before or after event.

    Need some info/help

[1] If the lifters are new, they should not have oil in them. Push down on the plunger, & without oil in them, you will get 0.125 - 0.180" of plunger movement. That is the pre-load available & the lifters can be set anywhere in that range. Some people like to set the PL 0.020", or a small...

Are My New 727 Clutches, Bands, or Fluid Burning?

Hi stall c'ters generate a lot of heat, so you need a large fluid cooler. Fluid heat is the killer. It hardens the seals, which then cause clutch/band slippage.....& smell.

Appreciate some input on spark plug reading

A more 'scientific' approach to plug heat range might be to use what the car maker spent hours on testing & researching. Then look at your engine & see what has been changed that might require a change, if any, in heat range; do not just fit colder plugs because Billy fitted colder plugs to his...
