    1972 Dodge Colt

Yeah, the Valiant head/engine looked untouched, head gasket certainly looked OE & was rusted through up front where it should be blocking the hole in the deck...one of those sneaky causes of overheating,.....& I'm fairly sure the Lancer head was surfaced, with the Victor gasket present (.045"...

    Inner valve springs

The schrader traps air in the hose/gauge, that means it only lets pressure out of the cyl., not in...just leave the air hose plugged on until that cylinder's finished & move to next.

    1972 Dodge Colt

Not directly, it is just an indicator of how much has been cut, as the cut intrudes into the chamber shape the amount of cc's removed changes...usually less per .010" because the chamber gets smaller as You pass the bore-size area. A lot less once You hit the open quench area...if You get that far.

    Inner valve springs

Do You have a leakdown tester or compression tester w/a detachable hose that has a std. Milton or I/M quick disconnect? If so, take the light-springed schrader valve out, screw it in & plug the air hose on.It wont matter w/the rocker shafts off, if You put 100psi in there, there's 300+ pounds of...

Timing chain cover and head bolt questions

The longer headbolts are self evident if You look, but they go between the intake ports with the oil feed passages. The timing covers were changed on LA's so the seal could be popped out the front in later years, the older ones have to be pried out from the backside, this was discussed recently...

    1972 Dodge Colt

To go back to that head, I just picked up another 170 from a '61 Lancer, head casting# 2202952-3. It had a Victor Victocor gasket & the O/A height is 3.595", the '62 Valiant head casting# 2206036-1 w/the factory OEM shim gasket had an O/A height of 3.610". The depth of the 'dime' on the Lancer...

Purrtieee.... I passed on one early '90's for $700, still kinda regret not doing that. Guy said it was an A125, rockers were 1/2 gone, but most of the rest was there.

1.5 or 1.6 ratio how to choose?

Just be sure the valve springs are up to the increased lift & lift/close rates, check with the cam grinder to be certain, & be sure the installed ht./seat load is what's specified.

    Torque plates

If You've ever pulled the head off of an AMC 6 including an HO 4.0L, the crosshatch is gone adjacent to the 1/2" head bolts, like a 5/8"-3/4" swath. Like He said, some get it all the time because they're prone. This is when folks don't get why a BRM 'dingleberry' hone works better needs pointing...

    Torque plates

When I was buying some equipment ~20yrs ago, I discussed hot honing with them, & they said the NAPCAR guys were trying it but it wasn't getting the results they were expecting. I said that didn't make sense, & was curious why, so I stayed plugged in to it.....turned out they needed to pre-heat...

How would you rebuild this 318?

Is the oil pressure good? Check with a gauge if You don't have one already. If it's a piston/pin it goes knocka-knocka & is a sharper/brighter sound, rods usually sound duller/heavier with a deep knock-knock. If that's Your ride in the avatar, I'd find & fix the knock, & get back to cruisin'...
