    5.9 magnum and the ax15

I'm going to hunt down a ax15 to put behind a 5.9 magnum and hope it survives. Does any 5.9 fly wheel fit with the the ax15? I have to use a 5.9 flywheel for engine ballance. Is that gonna bolt up? I've heard that i could maybe sandwich a 5.9 flexplate in for ballance and it might work.

    Nv3500 vs ax15

@dartslantsix and @75slant6 are/were running an Ax15. Dartslantsix had his for sale several months ago. Either way, they should both have some idea of how they work in a car. Also, the AX15 and R154 have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. As does the AR5/MA5. So you could start with an AX15...

I’ve put 20k trouble free miles on the ax15 in my Duster. Granted, it’s currently behind a bone stock 5.9 magnum.

My floor is rotten and I want a 5 speed. I know neither is gonna fit into my 64 dart but I'm ready to cut the tunnel out and make it fit. It's going a behind a 360 magnum but this is just a very stock street car so I'm sure I'll be fine. These two trannys are cheap and everywhere in old...

    Nv3500 vs ax15

I had 3.07s in a wrangler with the AX15 and 5th was all but useless under 55 with a stick 4.0 inline 6 and 235 15 tires even more so with the 31/10.50s I had on it for a while. I wouldn't worry about an OD trans with gears (numerically) lower than 3.21/3.23.

I drive a dakota with an ax15 and really like it but I was worried about killing it with a 360

I've got an '88 Dak with a mild Magnum 5.9 and an AX-15; pounding on it for 3 years now and no issues.

    Nv3500 vs ax15

Yeah that’s not the case at all in a car with a 25.5-26” tire. Like I said in my last post, anything over 55-60mph, I use 5th. And around here, I’m using 5th every single time I drive the car. The gear splits with an ax15 and 2.76’s is nearly identical to a 904 with 4.10’s.

The ax15 is so plug and play is why I'm drawn to it and I like how it feels so the using it every day bias is there

    Nv3500 vs ax15

Wow. What must the final drive ratio be in fifth? 1.8 to 1? Usefully at all under 85 mph?

    5.9 magnum and the ax15

...bound and intent to put a five speed in it, start looking for an NV3500. The smaller NV is not bulletproof behind a 5.9 by any means, but the AX15 was not offered behind any V8. The best NV would be a HD dakota unit rated at 340 lb/ft of tourque, but the 4:1 first gear is a bit much for a...

    5 Speed swap

I had an AX15 in my Barracuda. (Just pulled it this weekend and it's for sale) I have 3.83 gears and was running a Magnum 5.2L. First gear was pretty much a granny, so when racing I'd start in 2nd. There was a big jump between 2-3 and it felt like the car didn't pick up speed until 3rd. It...

    Nv3500 vs ax15

Higher gears are definitely required with the ax15. I was running 3.23’s in my Duster and still only using 1st gear if I was taking off on a hill. I’ve since installed 2.76’s and now use 1st through 5th gears as intended.

    NV4500 swap.

They also got the NV2500 and AX15 in some years- I've always thought those were Dakota-only, but I found a 2500 in one half ton and pulled a spare AX15 for my Dakota out of another... it seems like in some years they used whatever they could get the cheapest or was the most available (that...

    Nv3500 vs ax15

Here's what it took to fit the AX15 in my Barracuda: Rebuilding the Transmission Tunnel It shifted smooth with synthetic oil in it. I also shortened up the shifter. I was running a 5.2L Magnum. Only thing I didn't like was the gear spacing. I have 3.73s in the rear. First gear was pretty much a...

    5 Speed swap

Yup. 20 year old me on a super small budget wasn’t gonna be able to afford a T56 swap, so AX15 it was… that’s been 9 years and 18,000 miles ago and she’s still doing GREAT behind my stock 5.9.

    5 Speed swap

There are a couple of guys running an AX15. I know @dartslantsix is one - David Belau @75slant6 is another. An R154/MA5/AR5 could be swapped into the same place and gives better ratios. And the MA5 survived Rocky Mountain Race Week in a C10 behind a 392.

    5 Speed swap

Maybe it would be better to say that it sounds like the deeper final drive makes the transmission feel very truck like to you. Seems like @75slant6 ran a deeper final drive with his AX15 when he first did the swap and then dropped down to a 2.76 final drive.

    Ax15 Trans

Anyone ever consider using an AX15 in their A body? I've heard of it handling 400hp in Jeep LS swaps with ease assuming it's been taken care of. Seems like it could be an interesting 5 speed option..... Or maybe i'm just insane.

...of firewall/trans tunnel/crossmember reworking to get it to fit- and the amount will depend on if you are using an NV2500, NV3500, NV4500, or AX15 transmission. They also all require hydraulic clutch linkage, and most of the 2000 and later transmissions also lack the proper speedometer...

    5 Speed swap

But you have driven an AX15 with a tall rear gear, which I for one have not. So you are far better equipped to actually speak to how it drives regardless of what you compare it to. Frankly, every trans has compromises. For example, a narrow ratio trans needs a deeper rear gear to make up for...

    5 Speed swap

Correct, I ran 3.23 gears initially and 1st gear was worthless outside of taking off on a hill, after swapping to 2.76’s I shift it like any other 5 speed, aside from when I’m auto crossing, then I can run faster times if I start off in 2nd. Don’t spin as easily off the line and don’t need to...

    5 Speed swap

Plus an AX15 still has better splits than an A833OD. I also like that you can match it up with a rear gear that most people are throwing away or selling for cheap.
