    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

At 1.45 he talks about losing his track a couple years ago. I think that was the old roundy track I was thinking of. If I remember right, that one was 535 feet, or somewhere around that.

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

Riverside raceway in the late fifties, early sixties was running HALF MILE drags, on the mile and a half backstretch straightaway.

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

Yep, (maybe not 300 feet, but still well short of an eighth.) Was run on the front stretch of an old roundy short track. I believe, could be wrong, that it closed. Among other things, the shutdown was WAY short.

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

Mostly drag street strip car, 440,727,3.91s, I'm in high at around 330-400 ft, of a 660 ft track. 5900 shift point, 4500 stahl More track car, but still street driven car, with a n/a small block and a glide/brake, is in high gear WELL before 330ft. 4.57 gear, 14x32 tires. 6500 shift point, 5300...

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

Not to mention, the program can run much faster (especially on t-n-t nights). It's a good thing that I like 1/8th. Nearest 1/8 is twenty minutes. Nearest 1/4, not counting pomona (f#@k nhra) is four hours.

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

I like the fact that it is so much safer for old guys like me, to do 100, instead of 135, and imo, the second half of the 1/4 is just boring and hard on the car. The starting line, the 60 ft, the gear changes, and the finish line is what's important, and you get all that in an eighth too...

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

That would be an eighth-mile-only car, if it was mine. (For what it's worth, I think I might be in the minority, but I LIKE eighth mile!) Edit: I LOVE eighth mile.

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

...and for what it's worth... I bought an aluminum 9"center for my big port big block car......with 4.10s, to replace the 3.50s that is in it. I'll record the difference in what it runs, and the difference in weight. And finish line rpm. Gonna be interesting!

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

This note is probably late, cause the o.p. has already said he's going with the 4.10, but..... The case break is at 4.10/4.56 If you have a 4.56 carrier, you are stuck with 4.56 on up (4.56, 4.88, 5.14, etc) If you have the 4.10 carrier, you can use Dr. Diffs 3.23, 3.54, 3.73 (no 3.91s for a...

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

That's been my experience with an iron head 440 too. I've had 4.30s, 4.11s and 3.91s in it, and the car doesn't care. No significant change in et or mph, just rpm at the lights. Gonna keep running the 3.91s. My dumbass theory is that with the limits of a small block flowing head on a big block...

    Quarter Mile Gear Selection

Agree with all the above, 4.10s, 95 %. The 5%? If your stuff was mine, I might try 3.73s (if available in a dana). There is no way you need 4.56, unless you were maybe running eighth mile ONLY. (And imo, still a maybe).

How old are you and how long have you raced

Heating is not necessary in my garage, a/c is. 105-110° is common, and the swamp cooler is overwhelmed often. I usually work from 5-9 a.m.

How old are you and how long have you raced

As recently as ten years ago, I raced a two different airports. Banning, ca, about 100 mi east of L.A., the other in Rialto, between pomona and San berdoo. First ever of my laps in my Cortina at Banning, but only one race date, before somebody found an excuse to shut it down. Raced several times...

How old are you and how long have you raced

When I started racing, the old Irwindale was using an electric pen to write down 1/4mile e.t., and mph, (from the tower Chrondecks) and half the time you couldn't read it. And that was ALL you got. Early 70s. I went looking a few months back to see if I could find some of those old electric pen...

Transmission mount with engine and mid plate.

I used a steel front mount of a style that was popular 50 years ago (Hurst), and a steel mid plate. Add in a trans crossmember and mount. Sure didn't need a limiter, it wasn't going anywhere.
  18. 33IMP

Is a deeper pan worth it?

I put a deeper trans pan on EVERYTHING. (Especially if it has a deeper engine oil pan. Headers or a deep engine pan will hit long before a trans pan!) More fluid=cooler fluid=longer better trans life.

I FINALLY Found Something That Would Clean the White Letters on my Radial T/A Tires!

Glad it worked for you. As I understand it the current stuff isn't as good as the old bleche wite. I've been using bleche wite on the avatar car for at least thirty years. It's due for a treatment again.

Transmission mount with engine and mid plate.

I run a Hurst front mount (Basically a steel motor plate) and a mid plate in my Cortina. I fabbed a trans crossmember for my glide (original owner had a Lenco in it), and use the softest transmount I could find. Just to help support some weight. IF engine and trans move (not f-ing likely) i...

Wheel and tire suggestions for an early '80s D150

Easiest way to shop for wheels I know, is Summits website. Check out Aero wheels, and Basset. Wide steel Nascar style wheels are still reasonably priced, imo. And there are hundreds ,if not thousands of wheel styles for 5 on 4 1/2! Tire size recommendations depend ENTIRELY on wheel size and...

    Rear Versus Front Tire Widths

Itty bitty wheel spacers. Just don't buy the cast crap. Billet or nothing. Maybe I missed it, but.... Do you still have the 5 on 4" pattern? If you do, spacers will probably have to be for 5x100mm.

Longer rear wheel studs found, with part number.

Thanks. Hopefully helps others, I've got 3"studs in my cars that I drag race. I like those wheels. They look a bit like the 1969 recall wheels.

Any seen one of these before, or know if it was factory?

I still have a couple t-handles, I'm told one is quite rare (not sure I can believe that) and had an opportunity to use one on a couple,of stick cars I had a few years ago. I stuck with the knob on those too.

Went to Carlisle to see some GY3 Curious yellow cars….

I went to a 55-57 Chevy show, probably 30 years ago. I had (have) a 57 sport coupe, originally Sierra gold/Adobe beige (really, a copper penny color). Silver when I got it, I painted it a pale yellow and white. But I had decided to go back to the original color, so I was looking at sg/ab cars in...
