BORE SHROUDING TEST: 4.03" vs 3.91" Edelbrock RPM Heads Really Fit a 318? Project Mission Impossible

You guys need to just build stuff. Dyno's and theoretical stuff can or can not help. A guy I know was racing dirt track with a 318 and 340 X heads, had the fastest car on the track. That test is questionable at best. My experience is the same as 318willrun, 340/360 heads with any either 1.88...

Nova SS 396 sells for 250,000

We always laughed at Chevrolet hp numbers and numbers matching cars. A Chevrolet engine was not a long lived engine. Corvette guys were even more clueless. How does one engine rate 375 hp and the exact same engine rate 450 hp in a different car? I'll spare you guys the stories.

    make 225 sound better?

Another thing most /6 guys don't realize is that those engines used to get major tune ups. That would include adjusting the valves hot and running. Many times it would make a noticeable difference in smoothness, power, and sound.

That would not be hard to do. I think they only made about 3,000 a year of Darts and the same for Barracudas.

Nova SS 396 sells for 250,000

Oh yeah, it would, not stock. Fastest car around. Beat all comers. "71" 340, 3 speed manual. I bought the short block for a friend after he dropped an intake head and blew out the cylinder, the heads were not for sale.

    make 225 sound better?

It was, it was in a 64 Barracuda with a 4 speed and 3.23 sure grip. Like Vixen, most people can not conceive how well a slant can run.

Nova SS 396 sells for 250,000

LOL, He was not normal. We worked together in R & D. He told me about modifying an UZI to use 12 gage shells In Nam. He said all 396's would always puff blue smoke out of that one side. Another friend had a 375 hp 396 in a 68 or 69 Camaro with a 4 speed. It was always in the shop, but he...

    make 225 sound better?

I only built one /6 for myself, long gone, but it ran and sounded very good. 170 cu in .060 milled head, 268 duration MP cam, 340 valve springs, and a stock 2 barrel carb and intake. I used one side of the 273 custom duals with a turbo muffler and a custom head pipe.

Nova SS 396 sells for 250,000

I had a friend who seriously raced them, but there were very few stock parts (needle roller main bearings) and they did not live long if seriously beat on. 396's had cooling problems and would cook the rings on one the the rear cylinders. He told me which one but I forget which one.

Not in my experience. A 340 Duster would take them every time.

Engine charcoal and spark plug bonks

You left out a couple steps. First, trickle a pint or quart of ATF down the carb while it is running. Rev the engine to keep it running when adding ATF or water. Second, drive around the block to loosen up the carbon. Then you trickle 10 to 16 oz (coke bottle) of water down the carb while it...

340 Cylinder Head vs 318 Exhaust Manifold

I have run early A 273 exhaust manifolds with “72” 340 “J” heads. I ported the exhaust manifolds and used 273 gaskets with gold RTV. It worked fine, no leaks. What head castings are you running?

Engine is pulled - 273 rebuild or replacement 360 crate?

Go 273 or 5.2. Magnum intake valves are too large for a 273. Nothing wrong with early 273 heads, with port and bowl clean up they can flow about like small valve "J" heads and are closed chambers so you can get quench.

Engine is pulled - 273 rebuild or replacement 360 crate?

I have tried most every type of clutch. The very best was an original 10.95 440 clutch and pressure plate, but it was too stiff and broke things. I'm afraid my best 273 iteration was way over 300 hp at 6,500 rpm. I do have a McLeod 105 BB/Long setup to try with next engine. Not a fan of...
