    340 X head date code

My 1968 340 X heads have dates codes of 09047 and 09187. I know the "7" is 1967. But I thought the preceding three numbers were supposed to be which day of the year (out of 365) they were cast. Obviously, that can't be. Is it the month and year? So Sept. 4 and Sept. 18?

    What is this part called?

What is the 4-inch wide, 1 inch tall circular metal "spacer" that goes between the timing chain cover and the harmonic balancer on a 68 340 called? It has the thick felt gasket inside it. Mine is mangled and I can't for the life of me find one. Mainly because I don't know what they called. Thanks

Small hole in head at bottom of valve cover bolt!

I recently removed my 340 for some work and while going over the heads I noticed a small part of the intake runner on my left head (340 X heads) had been "punched out" along the side wall at the bottom of the valve cover bolt hole. The hole is about the size of a small pea. I assume somewhere...

    40 degrees initial!

Hello, FABO. As you can tell by my avatar I'm normally over at the sister forum but I run a 340 in my 72 RR and figured there are more small block experts over here. I run my 340 now at 20* initial, 38* total all-in at 2400 rpm or so. Hughes 2832 cam .228@50 .530 lift. I wanted to see where she...

    Vacuum advance can adjustment

I was always under the impression that on a vacuum advance, the amount of timing is set (double what's marked on arm) and you are adjusting the amount of vacuum needed to make the timing come in. My 340 MP distributor from Jegs (part no. 40500) says it's the other way around, at least according...

    Cam eccentric on 340

Should the cam eccentric on a 340 wobble, rattle and be loose when I prod at it with a screwdriver through fuel pump opening? It didn't seem right to me but the guy who refreshed motor over the winter says it's perfectly normal and all cam eccentrics are loose and move side to side. Is that right?
