Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Yeah, I came across a thread somewhere where a guy dynoed a whiplash and made around 400/400

Yeah, that motor is long gone...starting over with two I haven't opened yet...probably go with KB quench pistons.

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Waiting on paperwork to flip the barn find. just bought a ‘68 short bed 383 today. The 383 will need at least gone thru. I have another 440 moho to pick up tomorrow…so maybe it will end up 440.

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

so I posted this somewhere else, should have posted it here. I’m back! There goes the neighborhood! Got another moho 440 and working on getting another ‘68 truck to stick it in. Actually also working on getting another later model “barn find” truck that’s already equipped with a 440. Will...

    Stock short block,440 builds....

Hi gents, I’m back. I gave up on my truck and 440 and sold it. Not doing that again. Got a free ‘77ish moho the other day for the 440. Working on getting a clean ’68 D200 to put it in. I’ll probably have to do pistons (open to budget recommendations but KB quench pads look like a good idea?)...

Stopping the knock: Lower compression and ported heads...

I'm no engine expert, but I solve other mechanical problems for work and otherwise. You gotta measure everything and nail it down, write it down. There's lots of guys here that can help, but without good hard data, they are in the dark. A picture is worth a thousand words, but doesn't give...

Stopping the knock: Lower compression and ported heads...

Absolutely necessary in a situation like this. I'd consider retarding it if it was me. Edit: yeah, I'm a genius and didn't see the other pages of posts since the one I quoted...

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

No paymenets, the diesel was a steal, all it cost was my little sweptline nest egg, which I actually had started saving to fix my last diesel. Shouldn't be too much of a setback, just until I can sell the 4runner and some other twiddly bits, hopefully after the holidays, my machinist buddy just...

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Good news and bad news. I stumbled on a '97 2500 4x4 Cummins Dodge Ram for a steal Sunday...there goes the Sweptline budget, until I can sell some of my other junk. Maybe just a bone stock cheap ring n bearings rebuild on the 440 for now, and try it that way, if for no other reason than so...

I read in one of my 440 books that you want duration .050" lift to be 85% of Advertised lift, or more, and the more it is, the quicker the ramp is.

    Speakin' of 440 fuel economy.

I run a machine and welding shop so manifold is cake. Don't like the expense and complication of EFI but I know that's where it's at...and a TQuad isn't super simple anyway.

    Speakin' of 440 fuel economy.

If spending money on the build saved me money on fuel, it might make sense was kinda my idea.

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Jim's got a point, and it's sharp. I'll probably do the block up right. Also fuel tank relocation battery relocation, 200# solid steel bumper. I'll weigh it, maybe under 4 now, 440, bigger axle, bumper, prolly push it over. Slicks would be kool if I had a track to run 'em on. I got miles of...

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Went and played with RPM and 1/4 ET calcs. 400 hp = 12.xx 106 mph. 4.56 puts me at 5xxx Rpm at 100 mph Played with camquest.com, discovered dyno simulator. Wow, cool! Ported heads with bigger valves, 9.5:1, intake, headers, yadda yadda, and the XE275HL 479hp 5xx tq. Weee!

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

Here's what I'm currently smokin'. I may be leaning a little toward the high RPM side for a 4k vehicle, but I can't stand engines that run out of breath too soon. A lot of this is influenced by QuickD100, who ran lowbuck 440s bout like this in a truck into the 12s, and IQ52's low comp dyno...

Getting the most out of a low comp 440

I'm cast. Heavier recip parts = more weight = Mallory = $$$ by the time I get done boring, buying pistons, balancing. Crap. Is there a chance there is a stock bore piston that is taller but weighs the same as the stock piston?

Gearhead stuff to do in San Diego/LA?

These are the two large cities I'm closest to, and going to be spending some time in them (no more than I have to) and wondered what I should look for whilst there for entertainment. Mopar/muscle/hotrod shops, clubs cruises, etc.?

    Speakin' of 440 fuel economy.

What exactly were the specs of that 318 and Ram? I like the small turbo the spools up at low RPM to boost mpg theory.

    Thinking about a turbo slant...

It can be done inexpensively with good results according to this article. I have a slant, and I'd try it...but I think the hole in the side of the block might leak all the boost out! (that was a joke, har har...) http://www.allpar.com/fix/holler/slant-six-turbo.html I thought about a small...

    Speakin' of 440 fuel economy.

More than three gears would definitely help. RPM gaps in my 318 727 are huge, poor little 318 luggin' it's heart out. Can't have too many gears. I thought about sticking my NV4500 (truck 5spd OD with granny first) behind my 440 in my D100 and gearing the rear to the moon. 4500 worked pretty...
