8.75 diff - metal in oil (pictures). Is it ruined?

yes the tyres were totally central. I had someone do the minitub/axle shorten work. He tells me all of these cars are not square and this is quite normal. I'm getting the same from a lot of people I ask

No idea Roy, :( What do you think to the spring perches, the axle sits great in the car and the hangers are spot on. AJ/FormS - I think it is where the new seat perches are welded on, not a line no.

8.75 diff - metal in oil (pictures). Is it ruined?

Hi guys, Thanks again. Bit of an update for you, I've found a really good well respected differential builder, I'm actually having a Detroit TruTrak put in, in placed of the old cone LSD. So the axle is now out, but I found this 'machine mark' almost like somthing was catching on the casing...

oh yeah and the bearing.... why has it got hot only on one side?! after 300 miles!

8.75 diff - metal in oil (pictures). Is it ruined?

Thanks, its just very slight and I noticed it. I wondered if it was not quite true when it was torqued down, might have put a bit of extra pressure on the bearing causing the heat. So can anyone advise what is best for me to do next. I need to machine the cones down, then shim them to counter...

oh yeah and this bit, the sleeves over the pinion is not a total cyliner, there is a slight buldge seen just about in the profile against the light:

better video No I was told, the bearings were pushed on cold. so that heat has come from use...

no obvious wear or 'oh my god' areas of scratch marks etc, only the bearing which is really odd. there were quite a bit of very fine metal bit in the oil, normal to what you might expect as it was a new CWP, some sharp edges around the area of the pinion housing but nothing else.

That pinion bearing looks to have got very hot, only on 1/3 of its side, only on the face shown there in the photo... it spins free but there is a 'lot' of up and down movement, perhaps you can comment on the video: View My Video

Okay thanks very much. So I need to find a machine shot and some shims. Still not sure where the metal debris is coming from though

The area where the cones meet the housing is the only place I can see where metal has come away. Is the unit destined for the bin or could it be re-used?

Sorry yes I will resize, was trying to add detail by way of large images. the bearings look okay not really looked at the pinion as of yet, do the surfaces on the truegrip look okay?

I also put a little correction ink on the side, to see if the cone is 'bottoming out' on the housing, it is. Only just though... So there we have it. Thoughts? :)

So the suregrip is out and now I understand how the cone type slipper works. Only place I could find wear was where the cone meets the housing, and there are signs of the metal bar in the very middle has been quite hot, wearing on two edges more than others but there is no dip in the metal
