    1974 Dart 318 no start

My 1974 Dart 318, 2bbl starts and runs fine provided I start it every day. If it sits for more than a day, it requires a long cranking time, and a couple jabs on accel pedal to get it going. Choke closes fine, choke pull off set to spec, new fuel filter, new carb. But, start it daily, fires...

    Mystery air flow

Agreed. I'll be checking that. Thanks

    Mystery air flow

No air movement veh stopped, air off. Air ( ambient) movement from ducts begins with veh forward motion, ac turned off.. almost like fresh air recirc system used to be.

    Mystery air flow

Just rebuilt ac on my 1974 Dart SE 318 4dr., including evaporator, txv, blower motor, RV2 compressor, blower switch. All modes work except when I shut off ac, some slightly warm air coming from ac vents. Checked, sealed firewall for air gaps, etc. All positions on ac mode switch vent to proper...

    Fan clutch?

At least older Fords had an aluminum plate under carb with EGR attached. You could either clean or replace plate. On the 318, and others, there's a multi port temp dependant sensor attached to radiator that routes vacuum to EGR. All that stuff on my car is no longer functioning. Thankfully we...

    Fan clutch?

Absolutely right. Unfortunately my intake is carboned up. EGR seized. Only solution I see is to remove, clean and /or replace intake manifold. I'm trying to find an intake without EGR plumbing. For the Carter 2bbl.

    Fan clutch?

Wow AJ, quite a course in the physics of the internal combustion engine! Thanks, I learned a lot. Wish I had an exhaust gas analyzer. The choke is slow to heat, someone prior to me, got rid of the electronic choke control. I'm spending a lot of time and money trying fix other people's screwups...

    Fan clutch?

AJ, amazing stuff. Totally agree. For years this car would vapor lock. No one knew why. We live in west central Florida and heat index can reach 106 at times. None of the emission crap worked. As a last resort, I removed everything. Knowing fuel was boiling and assumed hot air was being trapped...

    Fan clutch?

By the way, is there a better 2bbl replacement carb for this 318 other than this Carter junk?

    Fan clutch?

I wish I'd known about the Sanden compressor before replacing the RV2. Going to retime the engine and reset carb idle and balance. I believe timing is too advanced. These 318 engines run better at 6-8 btdc. This one may be above 10. Go back to basics...

    Fan clutch?

Yes, it has a full shroud with the fan within the shroud and about 4 inches from radiator.

    Fan clutch?

Thanks everyone! Super ideas. First, condenser is original. I will look to change that. Second, yes, I am shifting to neutral when stopped, for now, 3rd, yes I've tried setting idle with ac on and in Drive etc. Problem is when put in park to shut off, engine races forcing me to shut off in...

    Fan clutch?

Good question. Yes it's been converted. In fact about a year and a half ago I had evaporator, expansion valve, heater water valve, blower fan, receiver dryer, reman compressor, and dual matching belts replaced. Lines and condenser thoroughly flushed, the works. Cools great, just can't handle...

    Fan clutch?

My 1974 Dart 318 SE has factory AC. When stopped in traffic, ac begins to warm up, engine rpm slows to almost stall. Once moving, cooling improves to normal. This engine has no fan clutch, engine never overheats. Compressor seems to start to labor when this happens and head pressure rises toward...

    Rear drum brakes

Finally got new 11x2 drums on and drives and brakes like a charm! A big thanks to all of you who contributed your ideas and recommendations to my issue. The drums purchased were for a 1974 Dodge Monaco 360. As the saying goes, never too old to learn!

    Rear drum brakes

Hi all! Got my new 11x2 drums today and hopefully can put this dog to rest in the morning. I'll be sure to post results. Funny thing is, when my grandfather brought the Dart to my shop for brakes, I just needed to do front disc's and replaced the phenolic pistons with stainless steel, never...

    Rear drum brakes

BTW, this is a 4 door Dart SE. 318 runs great, just replaced evaporator. Try finding one of those!

Either way, thanks to all for the ideas.

    Rear drum brakes

So, once again I remove old drum. Measured the depth inside where the 2 inch shoes contact. Measures 2 1/2". Tells me these original drums are 11x2.5". Backing plate shouldn't be an issue. I'm trying to replace them because they've been turned past safe limits. I've ordered a couple 11x2 so in a...

    Rear drum brakes

Thanks guys! Great info. We bought Dart new in 74 from Tampa Dodge dealer. Front disc rear drum. Stamping on drums 11.090, made in Canada. Other stampings 80988-10, 55722, and 987. If I put a drum on with a lip at axle bore and tighten lug nuts, it takes the axle shaft end play out and locks up...

Hey guy's, need help. My 1974 Dart 318 has 11 inch drums from the factory. They should have been 10's.They are no good. I need 2 vented 11 inch drums that DO NOT have a raised lip at axle bore. Must be flat across the face. Help!

    1974 Dart rear brakes

Need some advice. My 1974 Dodge Dart Special Edition 4 door sedan with 318cid auto trans has 11 inch rear drums with the 8 1/4 rear end. Was built at Windsor plant. Cannot find replacement drums. Rear end has never been changed, we bought in new in 1974. Several shops have tried to locate 11's...

    1974 Dart no-start

Thanks for all the tips! Just to clarify, at times, when I attempt to turn the car on, just get the chattering sound of the starter drive trying to engage as if the battery was almost dead. After a couple of times of this in a row, the veh starts right up as if nothing is wrong. I will check...

    1974 Dart no-start

Have a 1974 Dodge Dart Special Edition 318. Has been in our family since it was new. It has been well taken care of since the beginning. The problem now is that I can turn the key and the car starts immediately. This can be repeated for several starts. Then, suddenly, turn the key and all you...
