    [FOR SALE] A108 Chrome

I have 20 pieces of chrome from a 1969 A108 Van. Some are in good shape, some ok. This is not the complete set of chrome but it does include the front pieces and the two longest pieces on the drivers' side. I'd prefer to sell the whole lot to one buyer but willing to part out for individual...

    727 Rebuild recommendations

I think this is becoming a weekend project, not something I do on Monday night when I have work tomorrow :) Also, I stupidly pulled the tranny without draining the oil so I need to do that before I create a huge mess!

Just to confirm, you talking about the end play between the drive shaft and the fix part in this image? I measured again after tapping with the hammer and got about 35 - 40 thousandths. Again- very rough measurement with my caliper.

    Measured about 20 - 30 thousandths... very roughly with a caliper (0.5 - 0.75 mm).

very nice looking! What kit did you use and did it have the gasket for the tail? I found a urethane bushing from springsandthings.com for $9

Here are the markings on the tranny. On the outside bell housing it reads 432-3 Inside on the plate around the input shaft it reads 3416963 L-4 Is there a decoder to confirm this is actually a 727 from 1969?

Rebuilding now is definitely what I was leaning towards! So then back to my questions- do I need any special tools or literature besides the FSM? Does the TCI kit have the pieces for the tail on the A108 van? It's definitely a 727, or at least that is what the door plate says is in the van.

    727 Rebuild recommendations

While my 1969 A108 van is being repainted and I'm waiting on engine parts, I have the stock 727 tranny sitting in my garage. It was parked for 14 years prior to me buying it. What are people's recommendations for it? Supposedly it ran before it was parked but everything is caked in dirt. Do I...

    Wiring harness

Thanks Bob- I'm looking at the EZ 21 circuit kit versus the Ron Francis kit. The latter is $300 more and I can't figure out if it's worth it...

    Wiring harness

Just curious if you thought about adding relays for the lights to provide more steady current compared to the stock switches using the EZ kit?

Picking a cam and torque converter

This is great information. Thanks! I will add the transmission to the list of upgrades I might do after I get my engine installed with the stock 727. Right now the van is at the paint shop, engine block at the machinist, gas tank in the drive way... lots of time to plan and put things back together!

Picking a cam and torque converter

It's a 1969 A108 with the heavy duty axles. The van is actually at the paint shop so I don't know the rear differential ratio. These older vans hang from the cross beam on an eyelid in the tail. I'm assuming I'd have to swap the tail from the 46RH. The reao How sensitive is cam selection? In...

Picking a cam and torque converter

Do you replace the standard dash gear select? I've seen a part from Compushift- is that what you recommend?

Picking a cam and torque converter

Are those electronically controlled? If I were to do that eventually, how do I pick my cam now to give me the best low end torque and low cruising RPMs?
  19. jgchemie

Picking a cam and torque converter

I'm building a 390 (4" stoker kit) from my 318 LA engine to power my A108 van (adding aluminum heads and probably EFI). The purpose of this van will be to cruise on the highway but I want good low-end torque. I'm planning to keep the compression ratio low to run off pump gas. I'd like to retain...

    727 Tail Swap

I'm hopefully going to decide on the engine swap in a few days then I'll get to work on the transmissions. I did my first couple engine rebuilds when I was 15-16 with no mechanical background and they turned out alright. 25+ years later hopefully I can handle an automatic transmission tail swap...

    727 Tail Swap

I'll still think about it! It would be nice if one of those old tranny guys was nearby to lend a hand.

    727 Tail Swap

This is why I might just take the two 727 transmissions to a local shop and pay $1,000. More fun to work on the engine IMO. But at least I know it's possible to do the tail swap now

    727 Tail Swap

Interesting perspective :) I rarely keep a car more than 3 years but it might take me three years to get this van running again! I'm definitely more excited about the BB in the van but honestly worried that after I build it I'll have some major technical difficulties getting it installed.
  24. jgchemie

    727 Tail Swap

Exactly why I'm still considering the 400 stroker (maybe to a 499) with Stealth or Edelbrock RPM heads! I might pop wheelies! But the fit.... The 318 can be stroked to 390 and basically drop right in. A crate 360/408 similarly can fit easily, just need to change the torque converter for...

    727 Tail Swap

I was planning to add a stroker setup, new heads, manifold, etc. to either the 318 or the 400. The main challenges with the 400 are a) fitting it into the doghousing of the A108 and b) getting it to mate with the correct transmission. I've priced out the stroker/upgrades for both and they are...

    727 Tail Swap

All of this still depends on whether I try to squeeze the 400 B into my A108 van or stick with the 318 (or buy a crate 360/408 magnum stroker....) But knowing the complexity of swapping out the transmission tail is key!

    727 Tail Swap

Thanks.... I think! I'll read through the FSM and decide if I'm up for the challenge. It's going to be a long winter.....
  28. jgchemie

    727 Tail Swap

That sounds a lot better than the $1250 a transmission shop quoted me for doing the work. For someone that's never worked on a transmission but has done other suspension and engine work, how complicated is this job?
  29. jgchemie

    727 Tail Swap

I think I got it! I'm assuming I'll need a rebuild kit for the '76. Are there any gaskets/kits for the tail that I need to find for the '69? In other worlds, do you think I'll end up needing to buy two rebuild kits? One for the '76 transmission and a second for the '69 output shaft and tail...
