I'm not wanting to read the whole thread through. Didn't you mention one of the cylinders was down on a compression test?

You're this far in. Pull the heads-its not that big of a deal. No way in hell I'd build it back up without doing that. Even if only for piece of mind.

It is what it is. Garbage content. Unfortunately here we are, feeding the algorithm by talking about it here. Remember, if something is free (YouTube), it's because YOU are the product being sold. This is garbage content and I'm not going to reinforce it further by bothering to click on it.

    Dowel pins/ Dowel pins sets

5/16 x 1/2" long pins, $10 for a pack of 25 McMaster-Carr You have to measure the pin diameter and lengths you need and just order the sizes you want. Everyone in this hobby should be aware of McMaster they have everything.

If someone else hasn't mentioned it ... Bring your cam with you to the shop. Tell them to make sure it spins freely after the cam bearing installation. Make sure you check this BEFORE you start putting the short block together.

    Kevco oil pan finish

It's zinc plated. Just depends on how you'll use it. It'll easily last as long as the paint. Will it stay show car clean and fresh forever? No. But. Nothing does so there's that. Honestly though for anything short of a short car... Who cares? Lol

Yep. Gotta have a welder. I prefer my Miller mig. Point and shoot I'd never recommend a stick welder.

It's been a bazillion years since I looked at it but I think I just used a regular alternator bracket and made my own turnbuckle setup with rod ends and a lh rh threaded turnbuckle from McMaster

    Quadrajet vs Edelbrock 1405

IMO the only decent looking carbs... Holley 4bl based carbs The Carter/Edelbrock look old school cool on a tunnel ram Weber carbs with stacks are neato All the other should stay under the hood, and hidden by an air cleaner lol.

    Quadrajet vs Edelbrock 1405

It'd be neat for sure but aesthetics was never it's strength.

    Quadrajet vs Edelbrock 1405

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say the Edelbrock carb has issues that can't easily be resolved. They have a very pesky off idle lean condition that causes hesitation and really can't be dialed out without having a very rich idle mixture setting. And trust me, I'm well aware of the...

Drilling Holes In Carb Throttle Plate Blades

Good question. You can figure this out, pretty closely, without getting too scientific. But you basically need to learn the basics of degreeing a cam. But with a degree wheel and a dial indicator with an extended tip, you could figure out intake duration without pulling the intake. If you have...

Drilling Holes In Carb Throttle Plate Blades

If it has 4 corner idle you can't just open up the secondary butterflies.
  24. Mean416

Drilling Holes In Carb Throttle Plate Blades

This is simple and doesn't take a long winded response. The engine needs enough airflow and fuel at idle to have a stable idle. Lumpy cams need a higher idle speed. If you uncover the transfer slots to get the idle where it needs to be, it will run rich, load up, etc. Add timing to get the idle...

Continuing ignition timing debate from the 416 thread.

Thanks for the correction. I'm not an expert in tuning. Just an engineer with a solid grasp of fundamentals.

Continuing ignition timing debate from the 416 thread.

Legit questions, but either way what it wants steady state must be different from normal accel sweep. I'm pretty sure that's accurate...? One example is accel enrichment. You have to have it for transient changes. The engine needs that extra fuel to go from a steady state idle to a higher idle.
  27. Mean416

Continuing ignition timing debate from the 416 thread.

I'm specifically only talking about the steady state tuning. How is it applicable to a dynamic acceleration? It seems like you should give the engine what it wants during the transient, not steady state
  28. Mean416

Continuing ignition timing debate from the 416 thread.

Actually to me I don't see how steady state tuning is of value except for steady state applications i.e. boats and industrial applications.

Continuing ignition timing debate from the 416 thread.

So, realistically how much power are we talking about for the investment? 1% 2% ? I'm not saying it's not worth it but it definitely feels like "the little things" chasing a fully optimized timing curve. I do understand the idea behind achieving a steady state before a result is realized, but...
