Almost never, not with chrome. On aluminum I will if there is a need, but that Blue Magic polish knocks the oxidation off like a champ. Sanding is only really needed to clean up rusty contacts, otherwise I don't want to hurt cosmetic surfaces, especially plated metals

3M Chrome polish, a short black tub with a pink cream, is excellent. Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream, a small blue tub, also very easy to work with with excellent results

I bought a Harbor Freight bench grinder/polisher and a pedestal. Staked it down in the backyard and bought a $15 foot pedal plug to run it handsfree if needed. Not the most heavy-duty, I used to run a 24" Buffalo polisher. The HF setup is fine for small parts. I already want something better...
