I have managed to find a forklift engine local that a guy will do a freshen up and an install on, so I think I'll go with that. Thanks everyone for the offers though, if I ever need anything, FABO will be my first go-to option.

Is there a way I can verify this without actually looking at the crank register? Casting numbers?

A really bad overheat and a foolish attempt to drive it home afterwards with almost zero cooling and probably oil too.
