    What would it take

I am assuming you are saying you have found the whole thing, housing and all. If so, you may want to sell it to an E Body person, and get one for an A or B body. The E body unit is quite a bit wider, but still nice property.

    727 or 904

My daughter blew a fresh stock 904 once with a /6, but obviously there is a way to build them to live. But I have always been a 727 guy, and have one in my car now. After reading this thread, I kind of wish I hadn't tossed all of those 904s over the years now. I know I found a huge difference...

    Type F fluid in 727

Hmm, once again I learn something from you Faboites.

    Type F fluid in 727

My old tranny builder (R.l.P. Rucker Massey) used to recommend nothing but F in 727s, so that is what I use.

    spacer in differential carrier

Thanks moper, I was just getting that sentence of fishy's all twisted around.

    spacer in differential carrier

fishy, I am confused now. I am running green bearings/moser axles, with a 742 (clutch type) posi, and am not running the little spacer in the middle. That is correct, right?

    Torque Converter Question

I have never heard a rattle in one. I used to hang out with Rucker Massey when he cut them apart, and welded them back together, never heard a rattle.

8 ¾ What may have caused this?

Carrier was made on a Friday afternoon, or Monday morning. :D

explorer 8.8 in an a-body: experience needed

Is this a drag car? Sorry, I am not familiar with your ride. I broke a couple 8 3/4s back to back, prior to switching to a Dana 60. Maybe things have changed, but I would go 9 inch Ford, if you can't go with a Dana 60.

    elongating holes on shock plates

I had to do the set on Dad's 65, because I couldn't find a set of 8 3/4s at the time. I used the vertical mill here at work. :D

    slant 6 to 340

Yeah, that is what I was going to ask, if he had the little 9 inch brakes or not. My daughters car used to have them, with a /6. I was always replacing them, they are just inadequate. Now the 10 inch drums aren't too bad, I had those on my drag car, but it was the weakest part of the car. I...

    360 trans to motor brace

I have several of them if you need them. I have to look at mine again, but I think it is impossible to use them, with TTI headers, if that tells you anything.

Mounting 8 3/4 to SS springs

No, they just set on the springs.

    what tool do you use

It has been a long time, but I imagine a 3/8 or 1/2 inch rachet will fit the plug. Not intending to be a smartass, but I always have yanked them out and replaced them with an 8 3/4. But, when we do my Dad's 65 S, we will be leaving it in.

    How strong are 8 1/4s

:-D I have to tell you my "back in the day" story about my first 7 1/4 blow up. I am 17, in 67 and took my "almost new" 64 Barracuda, 273-2 4 speed to a drag strip, 75 miles away, in Ark City, Kansas. Well, it turned real ugly, real quick. I was broke, and broke down, it busted the case...

8.8 rear in my A-body. I cant be the first!

Very sharp looking unit jgale and great deal! Heck, I ended up with over a grand in my 8 3/4, and about $200 of it, just for the 373 gears.

    Rear End Noise 8 3/4

I have done it, but darned if I could explain it to you very well. Yes, it is kind of complicated, pinion depth being the most difficult for me, since the bearing has to come off to facilitate adding or removing shims. If the pinion depth is not correct, you can not get a perfect pattern on...

    Possible tranny damage?

I agree, and doubt you hurt it. To empty it completely would be one heck of HUGE mess, it would probably quit moving after only dropping a couple or three quarts of fluid.

    8 3/4 rebuild parts help

Almost all of the stuff you need for that rebuild, including the flexible brake line, were still available at Car Quest a couple years ago when I last did one. I wasn't really happy with the spring/hardware kits, as they had a lot of extra parts since they have consolodated part numbers...
