    Low oil volume

Yeah, radiator, condenser, A/C compressor....if I take that much apart, I may as well pull the motor and put in a little more HP. Add headers, 4bbl, ....its a slippery slope!

    Low oil volume

It is definitely not a push rod oiled motor. I have plenty of those to work on! Lol. Looks like I will need to pull the rocker shafts and check them for blockage, and spin the motor to see how much oil is getting up to the rocker shafts. I am just not looking forward to pulling the motor if...

    Low oil volume

The hole on top of the rocker that oil is supposed to run down the top of the rocker to the valve tip. I had the engine at 2000 rpm to get oil to #2 rocker. Plenty of oil pressure according to the gauge (55), but no volume. So I am guessing I am chasing a restriction somewhere.

Yep, casting numbers and date codes check.

    Low oil volume

That was my first thought as well, but I removed the shafts and double checked. They are correctly installed. I don't see "massive" oil anywhere in the top. But there is oil running down the stands, so there is some leakage there. So maybe a combination of blocked passage and poor seal? The...

    Low oil volume

The 273 in my Dart appears to have been rebuilt at some point in time since it currently has hydraulic lifters. The rocker shafts have shims under them, so I am guessing there has been some block/head work. While adjusting the rockers, I found there seems to be very little oil getting to the...

    273 dilemma

While I agree with the logic, I can't be certain either way. There are NO indications of any red paint anywhere on the motor (other than the 4bbl intake I set on top). If it was a rebuild, they stripped the oil pan and valve covers as well, and there is no indications of any blue or red...

    273 dilemma

I just acquired an early 67 273 (2-8-67) I have no current plans for. But I don't think we could be farther away from each other, so it may not be practical for you.

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

Thank you. I called on a buddy in Arkansas and he had a set of adjusters he is sending me. Hope to have them Thursday. I had looked online and didn't find any, which is how I came across the 1.6 rockers and started this whole mess of the thread! LOL Scott Spies

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

I actually was not trying to modify the motor. One of the valves was "Ticking". Inspection found the ball worn off the adjuster. When looking for a replacment, I found the 1.6 rockers. So I asked if anyone had info. since I don't know the particulars on this motor. In fact I am trying to NOT...

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

Lol... Just curious, exactly what question did I ask that was un-crew chief like? The only question I asked was about adding 1.6 rockers to a stock cam/heads. On paper, the lift gain would be similar to a "Mild" cam swap without having to pull the front of the motor off. I stated I have no...

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

Thanks for the heads up. When I last talked to Kevin at Hughes, he mentioned the differences. So it is something I will keep in mind when I get to that point.

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

I think I mentioned several posts ago, that this is just a fun driver, not intending to "hot rod" it, at least for now. I am having too much fun just using it as a regular driver. I have a numbers matching 70 GTX 440/Auto that I will use when I need to feel a little more power. I will be...

This one is an Offenhauser that someone ground off the lettering on the top, drilled the bolt holes oversize, and added an extra vacuum port.

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

Thank you for the helpful suggestions and links! I have a line on 2 rear-end housings currently. So hopefully I will get one of them in the next 2 weeks. I had purchased an older aluminum inkate, only to find it is actually for a poly motor, not an LA. But again I have info on 2 more stock...

You are correct! And I do have a 70 383 core in the back corner of the garage...but that opens multiple cans of worms I am not currently ready to deal with on this project! LoL

Any gains adding 1.6 rockers to stock 273?

Mr. Rusty. At NO TIME did I ever say I had my mind made up or that I wasn't listening to the advise here. All I am doing is asking questions to gain knowledge. From the responses here, I have learned the 1.6 rockers will likely NOT be a quick bolt on improvement. I would not have known that if...

And again, just to clear, I am a die-hard Mopar guy, and have experience in building fast big block cars, but never had a 273 til now. This thing won't get out of its own way! Lol For the last 10 years I have been the crew chief on a 5 car NHRA drag race team (BBC dragsters - Danny Nelson...

Mr. George, the car is CURRENTLY a stock 2bbl 273. But not for long! just to clarify, I am not wanting to make a hot rod out of it. I recently bought the car and LOVE driving it regularly! I am still in the process of figuring out want I actually have, and what I can do to make it a little...

Everyone keeps mentioning simple things. The Car already has an aftermarket electronic distributor. I have not had the chance to check timing curve rpm. Exhaust is stock manifolds, but aftermarket dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers (which I hate due to too much interior noise). Thank you for...

I wouldn't think the stock 8.8 compression would have too much piston to valve clearance issues, but I do have a set of light springs so I could check without removing the heads.

Ok, once again to prove my ignorance of 273's......I see a few manufacturers selling 1.6 rockers. It got me to thinking maybe it would help my little motor breathe a touch more without actually having to open up the motor and change the cam.?? In all honesty, I have not yet actually measured...

    273 upgrade to 4bbl?

Mike. Yes it is 5489. Took me awhile to get back to the shop to measure the bolt holes. They are bigger than 3/8, so it looks like they have been opened at some point in time. The holes currently measure just under 7/16" (7/16 bolt starts to go in but won't pass smoothly).

    273 upgrade to 4bbl?

Ok, I have found a part number, and it is a Offenhauser with everything on top ground off. BUT.... the listing I found on Summit for it, shows that is it for 64-65 273, which if I understand correctly is NOT an LA motor. So this will not fit my car?
