should i remove inner spring for cam break in ???

I personally removed my inner springs for break in, I actually haven't had a chance to put them back in yet either. Also I used comp cams 15w50 break in oil in my 440

    Building 340 short block

To my understanding block filler is only used for drag race applications where the engine doesn't run for long periods of time. It does strengthen the block, but I would be afraid cooling would be an issue.

    Hurt 340

I over revved my old 360 one time. It was running real rough and gutless afterward. I took the v cover off at my buddies. All looked fine. I sprayed water on the rad to cool it down too. When I left I guess the oil pressure pumped the lifter back up and all was fine.

what is a 340 crank worth?

    I would say around 100-130$

How much horsepower is your small block putting out?

Depends what year your 360 is, and the compression ratio currently. Also depends on what the compression ratio will be after the new pistons. If you are going from a set of smog pistons at 8.0:1 to 9.5:1, You will definately see a large increase.

    Why is this 360 pinging

If he can't get it to stop pinging, tell your buddy to rip it apart and blueprint the engine properly. It it sounds like the guy who he bought it from sold it for a reason.

    Why is this 360 pinging

what is the compression ratio of his set up? Could be pinging because too much squeeze with an open chamber iron head. Also The distributor, if it is re-curved with too light of springs can bring the timing advance on too fast, causing pre-detonation as well. Like mentioned above, going up a jet...

break in oil vs break in additive

Does anyone know if that Shell Rotella T oil from canadian tire has zinc in it still? It says for diesel and heavy gas engines. Might be something to look into. I used that comp break in oil too on my 440. Says only run for 500 miles on the bottle for some reason, so I strayed against using it...

Very true, or at least get him to give you a free lifter.

    Engine Backfires Through Carb

You may be able to just remove the rocker shaft and use a telescopic magnet to fish it out and re insert a new one. But with the intake off and rocker shaft off will be easy. No need to remove the head. My advice is if you buy a new lifter wipe off packing grease with solvent and pre soak the...

    Engine Backfires Through Carb

Yes, where else is the compressed gas going to escape, to other than through the intake valve. Put a new lifter in and I bet you will be fine.

    Rod Crank Balance Questions

Yes you need to have your rotating assembly balanced when mis-matching parts like that. If your pistons and rods from the cast crank assembly are being used, they are a different weight than the 6 pack rods and pistons you say were used with the forged crank. The bob weight of the crank is what...

    oil pressure

Since you and a friend assembled it. What was the endgap set to on your compression rings? Too much can cause oil burning.

My newly rebuilt 446 smokes when you crack the throttle, how much smoke we talking here?

    oil pressure

To properly break it in, you do the initial 20 mins at 2000 rpm for the cam. But to complete the break in you need to have it in a vehicle and accelerate from 30 mph to 50 mph a few times up the road. This raises engine vacuum and helps the rings seal better. Also don't rev the engine too high...
