I couldn't find a picture, but this is exactly what I did to my gas tank.

I plugged mine with a sealed piece of rubber hose and clamped it on tight with a hose clamp. I have not had any issues with leaking at this point.

Boil the rubber grommet on the stove for about 10 minutes. That will soften the rubber up a lot. Then it will pop right into the gas tank. Apply some dielectric grease to the grommet once it is in the tank and the filler neck should slide right in very easy.

I boiled my tank grommet first. That made it soft enough to get to fit into the tank opening without too much trouble. Then I applied a liberal amount of dielectric grease to the grommet and the tube slid right in.
