I'm very far from an expert but I'm fairly certain that factory big bolt 7 1/4 axles will not work in a small bolt housing. I'm not sure what all the differences are but I think the housing length is even different between the two. I'm sure you'll get replies shortly from those that know for sure.

I've got a 73 duster with a big bolt 7 1/4", 2.76 open gear. The way I drive, I'll probably never hurt the wimpy rear and I'm not sure that going to a 2.94 or 3.23 gear would really be worth the effort to install a different rear axle. I definitely wouldn't put the money into the 7 1/4" to...

Ok, here are some pics of the debris. Ignore what appears to be small rocks. Oil-dry got in the mix somehow. The bottom pic is all magnetic crap. Largest piece is about a 1/4" square. The magnet is about 1 1/4" dia. for size references. I also got a better description of what happened...

Some of the aluminum pieces are 3/8 to 1/2 inch long and a lot of them are 1/8 ish. Does stuff like that show up in a properly operating trans? If it is dead, we don't intend to rebuild. We'll look for a used trans. Truck not worth putting the amount of money into that a rebuild would cost...

First thing I did. Its definitely non-magnetic. As far as the black crud they always have, it didn't actually look bad. Fluid looked decent also.

Okay, thanks for everyone's input. Dropped the pan tonight and no huge chunks but lots of aluminum shavings. Something obviously is coming apart.

Yes, it will roll with transfer case in neutral. T-case was my first thought but it is working properly.

Have not looked yet. We'll drop the pan tonight and expect the worst. I actually did get it to idle forward about 20 feet last night seemingly normally. Then after trying reverse, it would only drive forward with lots of throttle and was not smooth.
