Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Pittsburgh, Didn't we all run that junk back in the 70's when we didn't know any better, and we broke a lot of parts too. Just like torque converters have come a long way since then, so has clutch technology. I haven't broken a part in my 4spd street Dart in at least 10 years and probably longer...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I am guessing it's been a very long time since you have raced a clutch car. The days of flooring it and dropping the clutch with a 3600 lbs pressure plate are long gone unless you really like destroying driveline parts. It's all about clutch management now.

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Not with a stick car with 235 drag radials. He is dropping the clutch at 2500, bogging the engine down and driving out to a 2.0 60 foot. He needs to come out higher and manage the clutch slip with a bias ply slick and get it down to at least a 1.70 60 foot and the car should run in the 12's...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

First off is you need to be launching the car at a higher rpm, at least 5000 and ride the clutch out far enough so as to not let the rpm's drop more then a 1000 rpm's. If you have the close ratio 4 spd, then you have a 2.47 first gear coupled with a 3.55 rear gear give you a 8.76 starting...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

Oh ya, and I ran those weakened fragile bushed W2 rockers for 8 years, shifting at 7500 with 670 lbs spring pressure over the nose and thousands of street miles with 4.89 gears. Must have been real lucky, because not one of them broke. They held up better then the Comp roller lifters link bar...

Adding Bronze Bushings to Ductile Iron Rockers

It has been quite a few years since I ran W2 heads, so the memory has faded since then. But as far as I can remember from having both a set of bushed and non bushed rockers, there were no differences between them other then the bushing. The part of the rockers the shaft went through were a lot...

    360 stroker questions

How much power/weight will a stock 833 take? It all depends on the clutch that is going to be used. Add some slip to the clutch and it will last a lot longer than a clutch like a CenterForce II, that will find every weak point from the clutch back. A little clutch slip will improve your 60'...

How tight to set solid lifters

rumblefish, I did play with the lash settings with the 590 cam, don't know if it was my combo or or just the 590 cam, but I don't remember it making any difference in the performance of the engine. I do remember that that after playing with the lash settings that I ended up tightening up the...

How tight to set solid lifters

On the engine that is in my Dart which has aluminum heads and solid roller lifter cam with 256I/262E @.050 .668 lift, I did a lot of experimenting with valve lash. I found that I got a more consistent valve lash hot and cold if i adjusted the valves cold. The Bullet cam card called for .018 IN...

    Nick's Garage dyno's a 318 Stroker.

If you go back two videos back from Nick's 390 dyno video, he had a 360 stroker video, which came out to 410c.i. The 390 best pull on the dyno was 405 HP with 360 heads, RPM Performer intake and stock exhaust manifolds, the 410 made 425 HP with Edelbrock heads, RPM AirGap intake and headers...

PRH, All those FB warriors have to do is get out the there little part number books, and it's going to break their hearts when they see that Brian's Duster is the legalese car in the class. I will bet those three Corvettes and the Chevelle your going to be hard pressed to find a factory part...

    LA360 Dipstick

Chrysler made a few different length dipsticks and tubes dependent on the application and body style. I measured the one in my Dart and the tube is 10 1/4" long from were it seats to the block to the top of the tube, the dipstick is 21 1/4" long. Now I am a little different then you, mine is a 8...

318 balancer on a 360 crank advice needed

Just throwing a thought in here, but have you measured the distance from the pulley mounting surface to the inside flat surface of the hub that the seal rides on and the keyway groove is cut into. See if the 318 and 360 are the same distance, then measure to see if the outside rings are the same...

How long will this little buz saw engine last.

If you look at the last two lifter bores at the back of the block(one on each side) they are drilled and tapped at a different angle. My thinking is, after who ever bushed the lifter bores drill through to the oil galley to feed oil to the lifters. Then tapped the outside holes hole and put the...

    340 or 360?

Maybe for production blocks, but the X block is a race block, the predecessor to the R blocks. The chevy guys argue over 327,350,and 400 which is the best. The ford guys argue over the windsors and clevelands It's all just bench racing and personal preference and something to discuss and keep us...

    340 or 360?

But my point being is in 79 when the X block came out the 340 was long gone. So it was my understanding that the X block was based off the 79 318 block that was reinforce with thicker decks, thicker webbing, thicker bores, and higher nickel cast iron casting. That is something that been stuck in...

    340 or 360?

The 360 has one claim to fame the 340 never achieved, and that was being the engine that powered the quickest american production vehicle in 1978 in a pickup truck. I could be wrong but wasn't the X block that Glidden used to win pro stock in 79 based off a reinforced 318 block, I know they...

    340 or 360?

The 1974 360 Challengers and Cudas and the 74 through 76 360 Dart Sports and Dusters ran better than the 1973 340 cars of the same weight. Yes 318willrun my 360 came out of a 75 C body and is now 416 inches and is in my Dart and does have enough meat to go to a 4.100 + bore, same as a 340.

    340 or 360?

Okay guy, I will give you an apples to apples comparison. Back in the 80's I had a 69 GTS Dart, I had a 0.030 over 340 in it with W2 heads, 10.6 compression, Crane cam(242/252 .532/.552 108 install at 106), 1 7/8 headers, 727 trans, 5000 converter, and 4.86 gears. My best time was 11.60, soon...

    W2 360 build talk...

RatBastid, My launch rpm is set at 5000 and I shift at 6400. 416 cubes with 10.4 compression, IndyBrock heads, Bullet solid roller, Victor Jr intake, 1 7/8 headers, full 3 inch exhaust, and a Jerico DR4. Just a fun street beater that runs high 10's not real quick but fun to drive.

    W2 360 build talk...

I suggest when you talk to Liberty Gear see if they can set your 833 up with a lower first gear somewhere around a 2.9 to 3.0 ratio or find a 3.09 first gear set 833 to get the weight moving. Call one of the clutch companies that build adjustable sinter iron clutches like Advance Clutches ( they...

    What brand rockers are these?

Those Rockers look like a blue version of the black Indy 1.5 rockers that came with my Indy Brock SBM heads( or now call the Indy T/A head), and they are big block rockers. Old Race 340 Teardown

I just looked at some old photos of my 69 Dart and my Mirada when I was running the 810 W2's and Holley strip dominator intake( same one as pictured by Super Sleeper). The intake flanges on his intake look like they have had at least a 1/4 of an inch shaved off as close as I could tell from...

How much HP can magnum rods take happily

I had a 327 Chevy TRW forged pistons in a 360 block years ago when 360 pistons were far and few between, they had if I remember right a 1.67 comp/height and 10.5 comp. with 68cc heads. Which worked out with the 360 rods and stroke. What did not work out so good was the valve notch, with the 18...
