I am actually working on a fabricated laser cut part for the shock tower to firewall.

Here is the stress with the 2x3 tube welded fully to the floor pan. the results would minimal difference if this 2x3 were replaced with a sheet metal "C" shape that the laser cut pars are. Note the number in the stress range here. "52.97" That is a significant difference.

Here is the Connector not attached tot he floor pan. Note the number in the highest stress range. 77.97

OK, to understand the stresses we are even talking about... I threw together a mock stress analysis. This image shows what is happening under say a "hard launch" at the track.

What is interesting to me here, is the amount of people saying that there is so much flex in these cars. Its obviously a known problem, but to notice a difference from just the little bit of added strength from the floating type of connectors is pretty crazy. *Thats not sarcasm or disbelief...

Vert: That big heavy c-channel is what you also accomplish by welding the connectors to the floor pan. It ties the top plane to the bottom plane. Which is all Im trying to get across.

A-body Joe: Yours has a factor that helps considerably that has not been discussed. How much of the floating connecter attaches to the sub frame section. You have a considerable amount of material that make the side wall of the tube transfer the stress well. As for what I do... There wasnt...

You have proven exactly the point with your examples. You wouldnt just place a piece of sheetrock and sheathing next to each other, and only attach the top and bottom of the sheet. Its screwed to the studs throughout the entire sheet of material. Both to secure the sheet to keep it flat as well...

This also the reasoning behind "boxing a C-channel frame, and Torque boxes. It ties all the potentially free parts together.

Yes of course the strength an type of tubing plays a large part as well. It has to be understood that building one plane in parallel with another plane does nothing for strength. If that were the case there would be no reason for having structural steel in the shape of I-beams and C-channel...

Hahaa... Of course.... Thats whole other ball game there. I am strictly speaking of the add in connectors, whether complete custom and made in your garage or purchased, they need to attach to the floor pans to truly accomplish any real strengthening.

So, I can help but notice all of the sub-frame connectors that many people build, and do next to nothing for the rigidity of the car. I have noticed the common thing to do is to weld some form of tube from the front sub-frame to the rear sub-frame with no attachment to the floor pan itself...

If you are decent in fab work and good with calculations you can get a lot of great pics and ideas from XV engineering. Thats my plan. I love fabrication work though.
