    A833 rear seal & bushing removal/installation

Run over to MyMopar.com and download a copy of the service manual, they are free. Some of them over there got there because of the guys right here Some of them, you have to settle for a year ahead or behind, or Plymouth/ vs Dodge, etc. So check both listings.

Can you ID this Mopar gearbox?

E bodies and I think 70 / later B/C/ etc are instantly recognizeable because the tail has TWO shifter mount positions. E body used the rear mount, the only vehicle I think, to do so.

    Those with blowproof bellhousings

THAT IS NOT a "block saver plate." THE PURPOSE of the plate is to CONTAIN the thing if things go N, S, E, W, stern-wards, or bow-wards. If you ever show up to a track and it is something that requires a shield, a block plate is mandatory.

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

Lakewood had a terrible quality control problem. There were three guys in the late 70's/ early 80's involved with 4WD swaps. One put a Chev SB, Jeep, Lakewood, Ford 4 speed. Out of spec by far. another had a stock early 70's Jeep V6, Lakewood, Ford 4 speed. The 4 speed...

The importance of measuring bell housing runout.

I am convinced this was a problem right from OEM on my 70 RR 440-6. It had one of those hated scalloped fake 11" clutches (10.9 or whatever you want to call them) and it never released that clean, and wore pilot bushings like nobody's business. Like you, we we all kids then, no...

    Will it fit?

A short tail did not come out of a RR unless someone somehow adapted it there. Get the casting no's off the bell SB bells are all over the map. If it is an earlier, AKA 273 bell, it will only accept a small clutch. If it is out of a pu or van, it will be a large flywheel. It might not...

Rebuilt A 833 front oil leak

I'm also thinking............the rear yoke and the pilot both hold important roles to keep everything concentric. Otherwise, the pilot shaft can sag, + the weight of the unsupported main shaft will sag and pry upwards in the rear of the input shaft, worsening the problem. "Could it...

    Pilot bushing depth

You sure it was not spread by whoever drove the last one in? Should be plenty deep. Normally, you can substitute the newer "Jeep style" pilot that goes in the converter bore, so there should be plenty of leeway

    Convert to manual

250 is too much for what I see there, and if the seller cannot confirm what it came out of, I'd stay away. The only alternative I'd see is a "money back" deal if you have your car apart enough you can test fit it. WHAT KIND OF SELLER does not know WTF he has? If I live long enough to...

    Small Block flywheel and clutch

"Any" covers a lot of ground. You can't use a pickup (larger flywheel, larger ring gear) flywheel, for example. Doesn't the Lakewood destructions have some insight? You for sure want a WEIGHTED flywheel for your 360 and NOT for a 5.9 Magnum, to end up being properly balanced...

    A833OD Binding in 4th Gear

Could it be as simple as the infamous wear in the countershaft bores in the case?

    NV4500 swap.

Only thing I've seen in 1/2 tons is the 3500
  13. 67Dart273

    NV4500 swap.

Does anyone have a realistic comparison/ idea in mind of just how good or bad the NV3500 is, AKA either in Dakota or 1/2 T? Are they say, way weaker than an 833? About the same? What do you think, compared to the old NP 4 speed 435 used for years?
  14. 67Dart273

    NV4500 swap.

I believe this is pretty much correct and I "think" the easiest way would be to drum up an equally rare late model SB bell that was out of the truck that the 4500 came out of. "Good luck with that" I believe part of the reason they are rare is that the 1/2 tons got the smaller 3500

    External balance flywheel ID

I would guess aftermarket, ??? That is a substantial amount of weight in all those holes.

Is my crank drilled for a 4 speed?

In my opinion, there is only ONE way to find out ...Install, even temporarily, the bell/ scattershield on the engine and measure from the transmission mounting surface to the bottom of the hole. Then measure from the end of the gearbox shaft to the mounting surface

    A833 in GM trucks?

Not all of them used special patterns/ bells. I've seen photos of some GM setups that use what appeared to be an unmodified Mopar main case with an adapter plate on the bell. And you used to be able to buy those adapters from places like Advanced Adapters.

    What's broke?

Good luck with it. I assembled on gearbox and used a piece of heater hose for the arbor in the cluster.

    What's broke?

Some random thoughts...... Look CAREFULLY for ANYTHING touching the car body/ crossmemeber/ broken steel on steel mount, etc. "Transmitting noise." WHAT DO YOU have for a shifter ball / handle.......Decades ago a friend of mine had an ANNOYING noise from a cue ball shift knob, as...

No VIN # on A833 case

They changed, I've looked this up. Some of them were Chrysler spline AND Mopar bolt pattern, mounted to a Chev bell with adapter. I'm pretty sure I've seen photos of some bolted direct to a Chev bell with Mopar pattern, and I know there were some cases with Chev bolt pattern. I don't...

    Home made Hydraulic Clutch Setup

Yes. The one he had mounts over the stock rod hole in the firewall By the way who makes that?

    Home made Hydraulic Clutch Setup

A properly done hydraulic clutch is seamless. I think one of the big issues in the old days was that they "were not fast enough." I believe this was caused, mostly, by too small tubing. I used 1/4" hydraulic hose on my old Landcruiser and you could slam that thing like nobody's...

    Home made Hydraulic Clutch Setup

I bought (and cant remember from who, on here), a marvelous cast adapter that mounts on the firewall to operate a modern master, at an angle and operated by a rod coming through the stock firewall hole. He only made a few, but if you are a decent welder, you could fab the same item...

    Custom Pilot Bushing Needed?

Dorman used to market those small OD ones, as well. I have no idea the number. I also remember they used to have a huge heavy bushing would have fit the converter bore, but that was in the 70's, and with no internet, I was too dumb to realize what it was. There was never any written...

    Custom Pilot Bushing Needed?

The easy way is to round up a newer pilot which fits in the converter bore. The thinner pilots used to be common, for an "unfinished" "automatic" crankshaft

    Big block/3 on the tree?

I used to have (several) old Chevy 3 speeds, and got to where I could double clutch them into 1st from 15-20mph on a lucky day Our service trucks at NAS Miramar were 6--3 on the column. One day the Chief and I were going somewhere and I rolled up somewhere and casually clutched it...
