I did both, lost the well (correct height spare would never fit) and had a steel cell made to fit....not shown in the picture, there is a bolt down strap across the top and down the sides and 2 across the bottom and up.

I made my own from 13ga. sheet metal. It's not that difficult and you can keep the outer wheelhouses multicurved arch without messing with the well to well flange.

I bought my shell with the right side striker gone and a hole where the base completely cracked out, the left was nearly as bad. I did the plates and highly recommend them. Of course complimented with new hinges.

It is tough trying to find a modern color to compliment older cars. The body lines on the older cars tend to create more shadowing, so if you're looking at paint on new cars you might want to keep that in mind. Believe it ore not newer pickups are more representative of how a color would appear...

Oh ,this looks really familiar...I bent some tube aluminum to match the cowl arch, was gonna channel that strip of glass that runs from side to side under the cowl end of the hood and glass it in but found the warpage runs all the way to the hood peak. prepare for a lot of upsetting cracking...
