pull the plug off the nss, put it in reverse and check for continuity between the 2 outside pins. I would bet that the plug is too loose to make a good connection. go buy a new one (not another 40 yr old used one) and replace it. That is what I just did on my 69 Barracuda.

running a relay does not mean you can run a smaller gauge wire. Headlights for example, if you run a relay, you run your large power wire into the relay and then on to the headlights. Your smaller wire to activate the relay comes from your headlight switch saving the contacts in the switch...

Great advice from 67Dart... You are going to wire your amp straight to the battery BUT, you will be putting a lot of load on your charging system... all that current will be going through your bulkhead connector and ammeter... what may seem like OK wiring now may show up some issue later...

I have 2 of them (AutoGage brand) that do the same thing. I think the needle stays wherever it was when you turned the key off. They have been that way for years. One in my 59 Suburban and one in my wife's Mustang so it does not seem to be vehicle brand specific. I would not worry about it.
