too late now but look at real car vents in fender chrome and black do the same effect with thinned black paint and paper towel paint and wipe lightly. Do the grill and other things that need a black wash have done the redline on dog dish caps the same way. Did the letters on my Torino caps but...

bare metal foil also comes in flat aluminum and black chrome

cover flash with tape

grills are easy to paint thin out some flat black brush entire center of grill then take moist paper towel and wipe paint off high areas if you want chrome dull spray with dull coat after black dries.

bleach white also removes chrome , use elmers glue to fill gauges after you place decals or paint to make a lens. dullcoate paint on chrome to look like aluminum. just a few i will think of more to post
