(SOLVED) Dead cylinder at idle? Low temp on header collector

I could be wrong but if I remember correctly the EGR should be closed at idle. I remember when I worked at the dealership diagnosing vehicles with a rough idle by using a screwdriver on the stem to pry open the egr valve and then letting it snap shut. Sometimes this would unstick a stuck valve...

(SOLVED) Dead cylinder at idle? Low temp on header collector

Are you sure it's blocking it off? I can't remember how it is configured. On some chevys a flat plate won't block it off.

(SOLVED) Dead cylinder at idle? Low temp on header collector

Is there an EGR valve on the manifold? If yes is the valve leaking or stuck open? Is there vacuum going to it at idle?

That's cool, thanks for the update. Good luck with your project. Send pictures of your progress.

Do you know if the op has had the motor running yet?

Tear into it, or bolt in and go???

I'm not sure what you mean by clacking and clattering all over the place. Do you mean while he is cranking the motor over for a compression test?

found this video interesting.. 360 dyno testing.

It can be hard to get accurate numbers at full throttle and low rpm on a chassis dyno.

Tear into it, or bolt in and go???

Assuming this is a hydraulic lifter, to see if your intake lifters are bled down. 1. Pull valve covers. 2. Remove spark plugs (makes it easier to turn the motor over by hand) 3. pick a cylinder 4. Turn motor over by hand with breaker bar and socket until the exhaust valve starts to open. 5...

Tear into it, or bolt in and go???

If the lifters are bled down. The wallace calculator says a .030 318 would be between 9 and 8.5:1 to match your cranking compression. If your gauge is accurate.

Tear into it, or bolt in and go???

If the oil is pushed out of the hydraulic lifters by the valve springs (bled down) it might show higher cranking compression.

    Maybe I've learned a good lesson . . .

I should add the chassis dyno is still a very useful tool. Some things it does better than others.

    Maybe I've learned a good lesson . . .

Getting good low rpm data at full throttle with my chassis dyno is difficult at best. Especially with an automatic transmission. My dyno is a eddy brake dyno with smaller rollers (low inertia). My engine dyno does a much better job at this.

How tight to set solid lifters

I probably missed it but I scrolled through and couldn't find it. Did someone say that they had an engine that lost lash with heat?
  14. 92b

How tight to set solid lifters

There are varibles that can affect lash, hot vs cold. Cast heads vs aluminum heads, cast block vs alum block, aluminum vs steel ball type vs steel roller rockers, stainless valves vs titanium valves, intake valve vs exhaust valve. Etc. For me, I'm not sure it's worth figuring out exactly how...

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

I think the amount of time the cam holes are aligned with the camshaft holes are what is relevant. Not when the camshaft holes are aligned with the block holes. Assuming the camshaft bearing and the block holes are aligned. If you increase the cam bearing hole diameter you increase duration or...

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

Good question. I don't know how you would measure it.

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

I agree. But I would make the distinction between timing and duration. In your example with the bearings pressed in too far or not far enough this would affect duration. And it could possiblly volume in two different ways. It could affect volume if the misalignment causes a restriction that...

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

You might be right but i'm not seeing it. Can you explain how it could do that.

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

I didn’t build the engine or install the bearings. I may not be understanding correctly but if by feed hole you mean the alignment between the block and bearing then I don’t think that would have an effect on the duration or timing but more of an effect on the volume depending on how far off...

I probably wasn't very clear about the hole misalignment longitudinally. If I wasn't hopefully this picture will clear it up. Please excuse the sloppiness.

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

Offering a possible answer to my own question. Why is the oil duration different on each bank? On the side that has less oil duration, maybe the oil holes were not lined up longitudinally or front to back.

I wonder if the cam cores are drilled before the cam grinders receive them?

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

I was surprised that the pass side had 12 degrees of oiling and the driver side had 34 degrees of oiling. I'm not sure what caused this and I don't think it will be a problem. Also it's not my motor. When the opportunity presents itself on one of my own motors I will mock the cambearings to the...

Priming 340 engine and rocker arm oiling.

I have a 340 on the dyno today and was priming the engine. In the past I have just turned the engine slowly until I hit the position that oiled the rockers for each bank. Today I took time to document where those positions are on this engine. This was a 340 with an erson cam. Does this coincide...
