Is the 383 a better engine, or does the 440 just have more displacement?

    I'll take a 400-block over a 383 or 440 any time of the day.

Torque Converter? Where am I at? What is compromised?

My 2 cents; Don't listen to dedicated 'dragracers' too much. They usually don't care at all for streetmanners. Driving around with a loose convertor on the street is like your transmission is filled to the top with butter. Feels like a sloppy turd if you want to just go for an easy drive. Big...

413 cylinder heads... are these toast??

Drop them in a large tub with citric acid (safe) to get rid of the rust to help the machineshop out if you want. I tend to think it looks way worse than it is, but a different pair of heads can be found everywhere.

    B.B to 518 / S.B trans

Interesting they put out that powerloss number. I went from a 318/904 w/ 7-1/4" rear-end, to a 360/A518 w/8-3/4", and I haven't been able to get the mileage numbers I got with the lighter setup.

    "O" ring thermostat housing ???

Wow... $134 bucks for something as stupid simple as a waterneck.... what a bargain! ... NOT The Tony Parts housings... Pricing should be other way around because the 'smoothed' one required an hour of tumbling in a grit barrel to remove the sharp casting edges... Waternecks are all created...

    383 lost oil pressure

Good to hear. These rockers are def. not precision machined items, but the 400-rockers are most likely updated overtime and therefore have a different number in them. I'm fairly sure they should be better than the 383 rockers.

    383 lost oil pressure

The 'up' lifter is probably stuck a bit because of oilresidue build-up on the lower part. With the lifter way up, oil pressure is lost through the almost 1" hole on the bottom.

    oh f*%k

Put a stock pickup in it and rev to 6000 instead of 7k. I doubt there's much reason to push the rpm-limits with a 'fun' engine. Enlarging the block's pickup thread usually means the hole has to be offset drilled and tapped to prevent breakage at the block. Unless you have remote pickup like...

    FiTech Dual Quad

If the Champions work for you and don't foul whenever a bird takes a **** two blocks down the road, I would leave 'm be. But I have way more faith in NGK's or Accels. You need to explain/show how the scoop sits and feeds the carbs on top of those aircleaners. I thought it was just a mockup...

    FiTech Dual Quad

Changing the fuel's octane ratings does nothing for power if you don't tune for it. Higher octane fuel is usually not 'better'. It just has a slower burnrate to prevent pinging. But the slower burnrate means you can now further optimize/advance your ignition timing, and that as such could make...

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

6.9v, how much you think will be left over when cranking? Run a 12v wire from the battery to the + side of the coil. Then try and crank once more. A weak spark can cause misfires.

    Big block cooling question

Agree with that. I've had two thermostats, one stainless one with about a 1" opening in the center, and the other one was a brass Mr.Gasket one with about 2" opening. The Mr.Gasket stat brough the coolant temps down way more. This is ofcourse if the radiator is capable of cooling the engine at all.

No vacuum means hotter running engine. Especially at lower speeds. Where’s your timing at now during idling?

    Big block cooling question

Which was disproved a long time ago as being 'the' source for overheating-issues. But people rather like to remember myths and forget facts. Not saying the holes were not smaller than stock, but if the holes were actually too small the overheating would show up first with highway driving, not...

    Oil question

I've learned a good working pcv system will take care of most of the small leaks. The mid '80s 318 in my Dart loved the synthetic 0w20 oil I fed it. But it was a roller cammed engine I found out recently. I would have no issues running synthetic oil in an older engine. It's simply a better oil.

    Oil question

A roller cam engine is less picky than a flattappet (performance) engine. 'Main concern' with a roller is that there's enough oil getting into the rollers. I would base the chosen oilweight on oilpressure hot & cold. Depending on engine wear and bearing clearances I would start with a 10w30 or...

    Sudden Loss of Oil Pressure

There's probably small burr or debri on the oilpump internal pressure valve or bore, keeping it open. There's still flow, but hardly any pressure. Or a lifter has jumped its bore, bent pushrod, acting like a big oil leak now internally. But should be very obvious cause engine will idle rough...

    Wtf - roller rocker

I have the same rockers but no driving time yet on them. Just engine-stand time. Before installation I gone over the rockers and cleaned, broke any sharp edges and generally smoothed them up a bit. But my main concern with these things are the adjusters. They don't seem well designed and the...

    Crank Trigged Mopar engines?

Do you want to have a digital control and an ignition curve you can tailor throughout the range, or do you just want to skip the distributor? If just to skip the distributor you can mount/weld a 4-tooth wheel to the crank's pulley, mount a Hall or VR sensor and have that trigger a GM-module...

Tuning a DD 383 for optimum mileage / 1/4 mile performance

Those who bluntly say Performance and Mileage don't go together are fairly short sighted, as they are exactly the same thing! The goal in both cases is to make the engine run more efficient in the rpm-range of choice. First step I would make is to go digital with the timing advance curves. You...

    Hole in block?

True, but imo later on in time the factory workers seemed to care a little less on how they knocked clean the casting.

    Hole in block?

Seems like non of you above have ever taken a close look at a bigblock engine casting. That's "normal". I personally would have smoothed the edges during the build, but that's how most of the later blocks came from the factory.

Rotating torque for a new build?

If a good amount of assembly lube has been used the breakaway torque will be much higher. The 360 I'm currently rebuilding has, with a fully asembled engine (cam/heads/timingchain-tensioner/rockers/waterpump, minus sparkplugs), about 30-35 lbs/ft rotational torque. But its breakaway torque...

    400 budget compression HELP +++++

"451" strokers based on 400-blocks and 440-cranks are the most popular stroker-combo's these days. Most pistons manufacturers have "stroker"-pistons on stock.
