Good choice!!!! I think you won't be sorry.

904 for small block or slant6

The 727 is too heavy internally, and will cost you about a car-length and a half (or, more) in the quarter; don't do it if you care at all, how fast your car is... Just some food for thought..

904 for small block or slant6

A well-built 904 can usually handle anything a 340-360-408 can dish out. Unususal for a 727 to be needed...

904 for small block or slant6

The starter mounting for a slant six is at the top of the bell housing; looks nothing like a 904 for a V8. The V8 case (bell housing) mounts the starter down low, at the bottom.

    4l60e transplants?

It was the OEM transmission in the turbocharged Buick Grand Narionals and GNX's... not exactly weak-kneed performers... and, they can handle lots of power, when properly modified. Lota of Buicks run in the tens with them... Just sayin'... :coffee2:

    Who builds the best 904?

Thanks much for following up on this. You won't be sorry. He's a straight-shooter and knows what he is doing. His 30+-years as a racer gives him an edge, I think. And, he definitely will appreciate your business!

    Who builds the best 904?

Thanks a lot for the support. I'm sure Len would appreciate it. He's the only transmission guy I know of who has done a LOT of winning in NHRA Class racing. I think that makes a lot of difference, somehow. He's about as knowedgeable a T-Flite guy as I know. You could do worse...

    Who builds the best 904?

There is a Divison VII RACER, in Grass Valley, CA named Len Schneider who has 30 years' experience building Torquflites and builds them for a whole lot of Stock and Super Stock racers in that Division. If you go to a Division VII points race or National event (NHRA) look for his "SCHNEIDER...

    8.25 rear end advice

:wack: "change the gears in the 904 (with rear pump)" What are you talking about? ALL 904's have a 1:1 3rd gear... the difference in pump configuration has nothing to do with that. Or did you mean to go to the 2.74 1st gear from a 999?? Scratchin' my head on this one...

Help with an 8 3/4 swap

What he said. If the weight is on the 4 wheels, this is fool-proof and easy.

    slant 6 904 bolt to a 318?

No. The bell housing has the starter mount in the wrong position. WAY wrong.

    Let's talk about 550 HP / automatic shift 904

I have a slightly modified 904 in my 1972 Valiant that has an approximately 525 horsepower supercharged 360 Magnum , and it is a very happy combination. I have abused it on the drag strip with many aggressive footbrake launches and it handles the power as if it were attached to a stock slant...

    cheap vs expensive flexplate

I am not sure about this, so, investigate further, but I believe the 360 L-A external balance amount imay be different from the 360 Magnum figure. I'd check that out before I bought a balanced flexplate.

    904 or 727

Yes, either one can, but the 904 has a LOT less parasitic drag (unless you spring for a Pro Trans 727) which will cost you about a car length and a half in the quarter-mile, if racing is important to you.

    Advise for a 904 Trans-brake

Yes; the belt-driven centrifugally-supercharged slant six in Steve Nitto's Duster twisted a 904 input shaft in two at Vegas, earlier in the year... If it happens with a slant six, I can only guess what its lifespan might be with a small block stroker motor... Just my 2-cents...

Transmission Recommended to Run Behind Built 360ci Engine in a 63 Valiant

Thanks, Marland. I have some experience with that because our slant six has an early forged crank (small register hole,) but we wanted to use a later 904 (larger input shaft) so we had to buy a bastard converter that fit the bigger shaft , but had the smaller converter button on the front. If...

Transmission Recommended to Run Behind Built 360ci Engine in a 63 Valiant

The converter for a 904 (727, too, probably,) has a "button" on the front that indexes into a recess in the back of the crankshaft and it supports the shaft that the converter rides on; considerable weight. That button was made a larger diameter in 1967 or '68, and the shaft the converter...

Transmission Recommended to Run Behind Built 360ci Engine in a 63 Valiant

I have a superchaarged (Vortech) 360 Magnum that makes 445 rear wheel horsepower, in a 3,300-pound '72 Valiant with 9-inch slicks and a limited-dlip rear end. That 904 handles the power like it was coming from a stock slant six. Crisp shifts and no slippage... ever. A 727 is stronger, for...

    8 3/4 question

I thought so, too. I would have bought the U-bolts too, but they were torched in the quick-and-dirty removal of the housing from the car. It was refreshing to find a junkyard that actually had, on its property, a whole gang of early (1960-1975) Mopars that were all somewhat intact. Most of...

    8 3/4 question

I have the mechanical aptitude of a ringed-tail monkey, and the tools to match. Not a whole lot of people have a 5-foot lathe at their disposal, and I don't own a lathe of ANY kind, so Il'l leave shortening housings and axles to the people who have the skill and equipment to accomplish...

    8 3/4 question

Around here, A Body 8.75" housings are like gold... and if you find one somewhere else and have to have it shipped to you, that's expensive, too. We got the '66 B Body rear end with a 742 third member, drum-to-drum for $240.00; no shipping. I don't remember how much the wheels were, but the...

    8 3/4 question

The generally-inflated price of A Body 8.75" rear ends has resulted in a lot of people using B Body rear end housings in their A Bodies. There are some different width B Body rears, though, so you must be careful to get the narrowest B Body housing that was made. We put one in our '64...

FRUSTRATED! need help with carrier swap

Right. Fits between the ends of the axles, and needs to have the end play adjusted by that collar on the bearing retainer on the passenger side, adjusted to give about .010" clearance (play.) You'll need a dial indicator (cheap, at Harbor Freight.. get one, if you don't have one,) to measure...

    trans mount for 0500 swap

I'll surely do that. Here's a photo... not too recent, but pretty representative of how it looks, now... I need it as a daily driver; my other car got totalled and the only other vehicle I own is my '72 Valiant, which has a 4.10 gear and a Vortech blower... not too street friendly...
