    Valve cover questions

You made me smile again this morning @toolmanmike! :thankyou: Commando valve covers are always a lot of work to restore. The tins are pretty tough old steel but nearly 60 years of prior owners usually weren't kind to them. Overtightening can blow out the bolt holes, wire harness tabs get...

    What color advice.: POLL

Most who have sent me dual snorkels to restore want them in black wrinkle on the outside and semi gloss black on the inside.

Thermal barrier and dry film lubricants are typically applied with an air brush and can be cured in a toaster oven.

    Powder coated my AirGap

Was it brand new or used? As long as it's properly outgassed and no nasty grunge leaches out of it afterwards (see pic of a brand new aluminum M/T), a new one should hold up with just clear. The problem though is if nothing comes out of the metal after it cooks at high temp for a few hours...

    Clear coat or not

Not to be argumentative pish, but when it's done right powder coating is only a few mils thick. It will smooth the surface and make it more uniform to some degree but pitting, divots and part numbers will all still show. It's for that reason that I focus most of my labor on bodywork rather...

    Clear coat or not

Blasting only removes the gunk and grunge on the outside. Aluminum is a VERY porous metal that absorbs everything over the years. Before you make any plans to seal it up forever with a clear coat, I'd suggest you cook it in a dedicated shop oven at 500 degrees for a few hours and see how it...

    GROMMET TROUBLES

They ARE too small. I use a 1" hole saw on my drill press for the initial hole and a carbide bit on the die grinder to open it up to the 1-1/8" needed for the pcv grommet. Keep in mind that the seating channel / groove on generic pcv grommets at the parts store is too narrow to fit the MP...

What is it worth.. take one million..

Edelbrock Elite series. I have a nice set for a BBC (along with the more rare matching 2-piece breathers) on top of my bench next to @4spdragtop Steve's friend's IT175 gas tank waiting for a new home. They're cast from very nice high quality aluminum just begging for a cool color combo.

I just saw I missed your call yesterday Dale! Billy's on the phone more than a teenage girl. I'll call you in a bit when my coffee kicks in.

Will Hot Tank Remove JB Weld

I agree with @circlepilot on the JB Weld. The Glyptal (to speed the return of oil back to the pan) is pretty bulletproof too if the prep was done right.

    Magnum Aluminum Valve Covers?

Please post up when you get it. The only ones I've been able to find for my custom MPs and Magnums that have a thick enough channel to fit are accompanied by a plug and cost almost $20 with shipping.

    Helicoil

If the helicoils are aluminum, never seize is always a good idea on dissimilar metals. You can do it!!!

Correct breather for cast aluminum valve covers

Judging by this, it seems you can cut the bottom 5/8" off the plug (to the bottom of the lock swege underneath the groove channel in other words) and it would work. (Excuse the die grinder ... I ran out of hands.) The only 1" ID grommet in my stash is the same sized opening. If it wasn't junk...

Correct breather for cast aluminum valve covers

The covers are a half inch thick where the PCV knock out boss is and the manufacturer sadly discontinued the right grommets a few years ago. The ones sold now (not Mopar-specific) have a seating groove/channel that is much too narrow to seat in there properly. The only one I can find lately for...

    Valve cover issue

I found obvious cracks on the dog ears on brand new valve covers that were never installed on any engine. Unfortunately all of those pics were lost in the linked thread when the site upgraded a couple years ago. I probably still have them on an old hard drive though.

    Valve cover issue

It's just casting flash. Every MP valve cover that crossed my bench has them and they aren't cracks. The big block version has a continuing issue with the dog ears breaking off though, far too many similar reports unrelated to overtightening.

    Mopar Performance Magnum Valve Covers

Just blast them clean. It looks like the outsides have orange paint drops (or it's showing through the black) anyway.

    Valve Covers

Not on those. They only have a few dots of metal cast into the back of the plate in the center. They're as much fun to customize as Weiands and MPs are.
  24. CudaChick1968

    Correct PVC Grommet

As far as I know the original MP valve cover grommet was discontinued a few years ago. The kit was the only one I could find that has a groove wide enough to seat fully.

Some clarification on this new balancer please?

X2 on that most likely NOT being powder coating. Balancers have rubber internals that will not survive the heat of the cure. My bet is an epoxy paint.

    '65 Commando valve cover cleaning

Thanks for the mentions Don and Mike. I'm late to the party. I personally wouldn't use brake cleaner unless you're going to repaint them (because it will probably soften or remove it). If you didn't do anything with them since yesterday @Bob Jasinski call me tomorrow after 10 a.m. central and...
