I have them on mine. I used the studs. They’re necked down because the engine oil flows through those areas for the rocker lubrication. Now what I can’t answer is why the factory bolts won’t work but I’m guessing it has to do with the casting of the head.

They have a very detailed set of destructions. You have to take some vacuum reading at the valve then the charts in the instructions tell you where to set things. It’s pretty straight forward even for me.

If it helps I have a 440 With performer RPM under factory hood in my 71 Demon. 1 3/4” drop base air cleaner. Not sure what RPM air gap would be. The 400 is a little shorter than the 440.

Didn’t mention what cylinder heads. If they are factory and bolts you will have anti freeze. Personally after disconnecting battery, I’d give it a try without dealing with removing headers and steering linkage. You just “might” get lucky. I haven’t had to do the 440 starter in my Demon yet...

If it makes the noise right off after starting it I’d pull the drive belts off of the accessories and fire it up and see if it’s gone. Don’t run it too long as water pump won’t be turning.

I copied this from TTI’s website. This is where they want the engine sitting for their headers which should be the factory positioning and should clear with the proper oil pan. This may or may not be your issue. A picture would be very beneficial. Good luck on your project.

Without knowing compression, in my opinion it’s a roll of the dice. If the engine was built using factory replacement parts the compression is going to be very low. The closed chambers will help some there but lot of unknowns.
