TIMING CHAIN COVER AND OIL PAN

I am putting my chain cover back on and there is a thick rubber type of seal that goes on the pan. My question is this. If you look from the top of the seal it has the (we will call these the 2 holders that go into the pan) it appears that one is not on center. It looks like it would be one...

    New timing chain, allowable slack?

You had the block honed so that were the slop is from. If you look at some catalogs they will offer you the correct set up. Ted

    340 running hot

OK, lets back up a bit. When you say that you haven't checked the vacuum advance, does that mean that it's not hooked up at this time?

    340 running hot

Have you checked/adjusted the ignition timing? If it's not getting enough advance it will run hot. That's where I would start. Ted

    Low throttle pop/miss

Moper is spot on when he says "timing first and then tune the carb". Although it does sound like your low speed circuit is a tad lean. One other thing you need to be aware of is that this type of carb (Edlebrock- Carter) runs a lower fuel pressure than a Holley would use. I believe they want no...

    Quality Budget 408

My 408 is a very similar build. I'm running the late iron smog heads. I did some mild port work on them and put in a 2.02 intake valve. The static compression is 9.4 to 1. When it came time to pick a cam I too called Bullet. At first I was a little skeptical of their recommendation but I worked...

    Mopar 408 cam ??

Well I just ran a few numbers and from what I see you'll wind up with 9.6 to 1 corrected compression and over 200 pounds of cylinder pressure. Do you have good quality fuel over there?

    Mopar 408 cam ??

Oh and one other thing I forgot to say. I did a quick search for one of those cams and it took me to a Chevy pick up truck site. I keep jumping on this topic because you have a large diameter tappet in that engine and you're giving up some power if you don't utilize it. Your cam choice is a...

    Mopar 408 cam ??

I have never had my engine on a dyno but I did race it once. It was hard to launch the car due to lots of wheel spin but I was able to coax a 12.88 @ 108 mph pass out of it. This was with a 2.000 sixty foot time. I was shifting the car @ 5500 rpm and it weighed 3520 lbs that day. So with that...

    Mopar 408 cam ??

Rob is absolutely correct about ProTorque. They are awesome!! So getting back to your cam, with that compression and that gear IMHO you will really need something made just for you. My 408 has 9.4 compression with 596 heads 3.55 gear with a 28"tire. My converter is rated @ 2400 but we all know...

    Mopar 408 cam ??

I'm assuming that this is a non magnum (flat tappet) engine. Your build is similar to my 408. Mine is a flat tappet hydraulic and what I did was call Bullet Cams and had them grind me one based on the info I supplied to them. There's 2 good reasons that I can say for doing that. One is when you...

    408 stroker info

    lifter preload setting>>

I know that Crane recommends .060" of preload. And as said in post #4 you really should find out what the thread pitch is in the rocker arm. So lets say it has a 16 thread per inch thread. Then one full turn would give you .062" of travel. Then sometimes you just have to do it the way...

Heddman headers not fitting on driver side

When I bought my Dart it had a set of Headmans on it already and they were lets call it (clearanced) to fit the power steering. It was more like flattened. Just recently I replaced them with a set of Hooker's and I can say that the Headmans were harder to get out than the Hookers were to get...

    Life in the fast lane

    Life in the fast lane

Sam, you should see (as said above) approximately a 300 rpm drop. That could put the engine right where it wants to be. I agree with your first post. I would take that chevy grind cam out. Ted

    Life in the fast lane

In my Dart I'm running 3.55's with a 28" tire. 65 M.P.H. is 2900 rpm. It has a 904 with a 2500 converter. I'm getting over 15 miles to the gallon with my mild 408 and I really cant complain about how it accelerates. I haven't gotten to the track yet so I cant tell you really how fast/slow it is...
