5 quick operation and Maintenance Qs

Overheating on the freeway-do you have a hood-to-radiator bulkhead seal on it? It's the one that goes on just behind the hood latch. I didn't at first; even with a big Champion radiator my slant would get hot....then I figured out that air was bypassing the radiator over the top. Now, it...

JamesDart, Logan, 540Valiant- and all, thanks for hanging in here with me. I am now on extended vacation from flying- but not from life. Dramas finished or set aside, or simply endured. . .now, 'till I drop or get the thing to work as it should. Slight recap: as you all know, it was a long...

Trying not to put a Band-Aid on it, if I can- but that may well be the direction I may have to go. Just hate having to do that if not necessary- and putting the car down for an indeterminate time while I tear it down and have it hot tanked. Not to mention the money I have set aside for the...

Not the TDC mark- my calculations make the timing all of 2 degrees different- and advanced- from the original slot. Where and how many freeze plugs? Two big ones on the driver's side. . .any between the back of the block and the tranny? Thanks Redfish.

Jame, Frank- a very nice idea! I like both and will investigate further. Back from the road, where I have been contemplating the bad girl's engine overheating while I had nothing else to do but think. I will, in no particular order investigate: is it really timed right? Will use a TDC...

You are correct in pointing out that I can and will make a simple problem and solution more complex than it is- I do think too much. Your reply: I do not want to put a large, multi-bladed electric fan on this car unless absolutely necessary. And, it shouldn't be necessary. What I am trying...

Thanks Bill. The lower hose did look like it was collapsing, so I replaced it with one that has the internal spring to hold it open. The fact it was collapsing any might mean it has a problem pulling water out of the radiator (clog) or, it was too pliable.

Vertical flow, James. And, I am still leaning toward it being partially clogged and slowing down the flow through the tubes. I get ya on the flow test too- I'll try that; if it will flow that much volume it probably isn't too full of stuff.

. . .thinking of separating the engine block from the radiator and isolating it so I can pour something like varsol or even diesel (Kerosene perhaps?) into the core of the engine. That stuff I got out was like black carbon and obviously had no water percolate into it in spite of running it...

'Bout the only thing I can do brother! Do you just run water right now, or are you using anti-freeze?

I believe you hit it James- I hope this is all I find: Took the plug out- no water. Black, charcoal looking stuff, dry. Hacked at it with an auger bit, screw driver, punch. . .finally got water. Been spending a coupla hours scratching around inside with coathanger wire trying to bust this...

Well, it is a new day- I think I will give that a shot, thanks James. My wifey had a similar suggestion through a freeze plug. Will put it back up on the ramps and give that a try this morning- will let you know. Mike

More food for thought. . . . I was running a 160 degree thermostat- took it out for the flush I did today. Likewise, went and borrowed a system pressure tester and hooked it up- steady as a rock pressurized, even when the engine was running and tried and tried to get it to shake the needle...

This is a post also happening over on Slant Six.... It didn't help after all. Got her buttoned up, timing set, valve lash reset, idling smooth- and took her out yesterday and same deal. Runs nice, but after a 10-15 minute highway run it starts to creep up in temperature from 1/3rd of...

Did get the thing pulled down to the gasket- taking pics all the way, will try to post. See indications that the gasket was failing- paper separating along one edge between the #3 and #4 cylinders, some signs of darkening along the metal toward the water jacket passages. . . . .and...

Well, decided to go for it- tearing down the head to the gasket, will let you know what, if anything I find. Easy enough to get down to just the head bolts in about an hour and a half, drinking a beer before I do the "surgery". Daughter is assisting.

Not a bad idea at all under the hood! I wonder if I can tie it in parallel on the same sender?

Yeah it seems high to me too, but- Did the timing from an article I got in Mopar Action. Erenbergher (?) made a great argument that Ma Mopar set all of ours a bit too retarded. So, did what the article suggested. That actually fixed the previous tendency to overheat it had when I first got...

Yeah, did indeed. Filled it first, then started it and let it run while pouring additional coolant in- even idled it up a bit and added more as it "pulled" the level down a bit so I could kinda overfill it.

Memike, I would kinda hate to go that route- the thing may well be lying now (or the temp sending unit may be going away), but I'm trying not to hang any extra gauges in the thing for visual appeal (or lack thereof). I am contemplating running it back to overheat and checking the coolant temp...
