    Need respirator recommendations

8 hours max, but if you can smell the paint, or it takes more effort to breath, meaning the filters are getting plugged. The cartridges we used had the HEPA and organic solvent together. The fresh air system is a whole different animal. They use air from the compressors for breathing. It has...

    Need respirator recommendations

From my understanding, no. VOC means volatile organic compounds, basically solvents. Urethanes talks about the resin system used. They use isocyanates to cause the paint to harden. Remember Bhopal India? Water was somehow put in a tank containing cyanates. CO2 was released and suffocated a bunch...

Sorry I didn't put more details in, but you are correct about the colors. Black is for organic solvents, purple is for filtering out fine particles. Also cartridges can last up to 8 hours in a single use. Notice I said CAN. Heavy concentrations of fumes will shorten that time.

    Need respirator recommendations

Filters aren't cheap, and you need to keep them off the mask and in a bag when not in use. Use a good black/solvent with purple/HEPA filter. All fumes are bad, but the isocyanates are worst of all. The fresh air us the best, but not cheap. I've used both, and I've noticed with the fresh air that...

Yeah, the vapors from gas are more explosive than dynamite, or so I've been told.

    Garage heat

I live just a few miles north of him, and wood is not a problem. My first winter in new house with a similar garage I had stapled 3 mil plastic on walls and ceiling. I used a thermostat controlled torpedo heater and used K-1 kerosene. Supposed to burn cleaner, but a little more expensive than...

    Kobalt Oil-free Compressor spits water

Every time. I put an extension on it so I don't have to reach all the way under it. And I didn't have the extra length of hose on at first, or the traps. Fortunately I wasn't painting yet.

Good to hear you're doing better to the point where you don't have to sell everything off.

    Kobalt Oil-free Compressor spits water

Another reason for water, that I found, is how long does the compressor run? If it isn't big enough, CFM's, it runs constantly trying to keep the tank filled to the shut off point. I tried using a air operated sander......will not work. I use the hose up, then down with a trap after. Also have a...

    1976 Dodge Dart- Won’t Start.....

Yeah, look at battery connections. If there is a whitish colored crud on there, it's keeping starter from getting the full oomph from battery. If so, GENTLY twist the connector. I think it will usually be on the + positive side, the whitish powder that is.

    Nitrile gloves, or better alternatives?

If you're not allergic, then latex is the way to go. And the thicker the better. No gloves, and I mean NO GLOVES will last using some of the harsher solvents. Solvents like anything ketone in the name. Or just regular solvents used in cleaning. I try to get the 4mil thick latex gloves. But they...

    Liquid fart, in a crack

I had some fuel tank sealer at one time. Not sure where it got to. Had it to test adhesion, had a special jig made when applying it to fit on an Instron tester. I was going to use it for concrete seams.

    WD40 Cleaner& Degreaser

Ran across this stuff where I work. I guess they make and package it. It's a water based product. How good is it? Anyone here know? I'll post a picture at home when I can. Thanks.

    Newbie welder question.

I have a Lincoln Weld-Pak 110. I am not a professional. Not even close to intermediate.... The book and other info I read on using it is that smaller wire is better on thinner metal. I think the metal on my Dart is either 18 or 20 gauge. I practiced before being serious with the .035 wire and...

    220V to 110V converter

Hmmm, I have a 220 in my basement for dryer that I don't need cause the one I have is gas. I was wondering about breaking the 220 down and run to garage for more juice. Now it's 110 at 15 amps. Sounds as though it is a little more involved than just splitting it in half. I am not versed in...

New Spray Paint Cans That Stop Spraying After The First Squirt?

Primers have a huge amount of pigment in them. If not at right temp or shook very well the material might be clumped up. Same thing happens to me sometimes.

New Spray Paint Cans That Stop Spraying After The First Squirt?

Propane is used as the propellant in them. In cooler weather the propane contract, it loses pressure. Just like your propane grill won't work as well in cooler weather. It is possible for contaminants to get inside, but not likely. I mean it is possible to get a bad can once in a while; no QC is...

Thanks again! I work with coatings, so lighting is very important to how you match paint. New information is always cool to hear. And who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I'm no where near an expert, but this has definitely taught me some things about lighting.

    LED bulbs for garage/shop

Interesting. Seems that the Kelvin/lumens of a particular light will determine the hue of a light, whether it is yellow tint up to blue; the lower the lumens the yellower it is. The higher the lumens the more blue. I did not know that. Thanks!

    LED bulbs for garage/shop

Yeah, the first LED incandescent fixture bulbs we're Philips brand. One went out within a year, the other is still going. I think Philips got out of the market as I haven't seen any in a while. As for the color, it's usually because of filters. Color booths used for color matching will mimic...
