    Exhaust Tips

I haven't installed them yet but a few years back I bought a pair of tips for my Duster from TTI, they looked gorgeous when I pulled them out of the box to look them over. Pretty sure they're stainless.

    Edelbrock heads with OEM manifolds

I've also had similar experience, the 5.9/360 in my Duster has ported Edelbrocks and 9:1 compression while the 360 in my D200 has stock iron heads and 8:1 compression (rated 8.2:1 but likely lower). I've never had the Duster engine ping even when the ignition timing was overly advanced but the...

Big block exhaust is still loud

Ultra Flos are definitely louder than Super Turbos, I'm surprised @dodgedifferent2 found the Turbos loud but I guess it goes to show a LOT of the sound depends on the engine making it. Maybe he had the exhaust rubbing the chassis/body somewhere or the hangers weren't all rubber isolated...

Big block exhaust is still loud

Not that it's the best solution but 2.5" duals would be far from choking your 383 unless it's 500+ HP. Going to 2.5" tailpipes and adding resonators there would quiet it down a lot. Next best would just be adding 3" resonators in the tailpipes. Triple-pass mufflers are significantly quieter...

    Pypes exhaust

I've had the 2.5" Pypes X-pipe system on my Duster since 2009. Considering I used round canister-style (like a glasspack) Classic Chambered PowerStick mufflers instead of center-in, offset-out oval-case mufflers like the system is intended for the fit was great. Still holding up excellent all...

360 la headers & straight pipe

You aren't necessarily "wrong", that is generally how it works because hardly anybody bothers to bolt 3-foot or longer collector extensions onto their headers. Backpressure and velocity are directly related, think about if you've ever been drinking through a straw and you pull the end of the...

360 la headers & straight pipe

Engine Masters also disproved the burned paint mark test. Each dyno pull they did, the paint just burned farther up the collector extension until eventually the entire mark was burned. Collector extension (or same-diameter pipe as collectors with full exhaust) needs to be at least 18" long and...

360 la headers & straight pipe

A stock 1973 360 is very low compression (barely 8:1) and if it has a 2-bbl cam it'll hardly make any noise even with open headers. My '72 D200 has a 360 with stock 2-bbl cam and when I put headers on it I drove it around for a bit with no exhaust and it was only loud when I revved it or had it...

    Yeah, The Flex-Pipe Doesn't Work...

Just make some templates out of cardboard to show the shape of the pipe you need and have a local exhaust shop bend them up and weld on the proper flanges to mate to your manifolds. Ideally you want the ID of the pipe to match the ID of the manifold outlet for at least 12-18" back to keep the...

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

The 78500 are what I have. I found some old pics of when I fabbed the downpipes. The installed pic sucks but you can kinda see how it snakes around the steering linkage. And yes the paint changed color after being run lol.

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

That's where collector extensions are key. Gotta keep the velocity up in the collectors or else there isn't much scavenging going on until higher RPMs. Most "race" headers have noticeably longer collectors for this reason.

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

I think you'll be fine going with shorties although you want ones that aren't "block hugger" type with the outlets pointing straight down; having the outlets angled backwards instead will be a great benefit because you can have smoother bends with the downpipes and keep them the same ID as the...

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

I think he was referring to me since he quoted my post but still worthwhile to read your experience. I paid around $650 for my coated D453's including shipping as I used AutoZone's 15% off deal and ordered them last December before all the recent inflation. I think for my case most of the...

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

Haha no worries. I have a set of D453's I bought last November for my Duster with an AutoZone discount as I knew prices were going to go up from inflation. Still haven't installed them yet but I'm excited to see how the performance will improve, the Duster currently has Hedman Tight Tubes...

I read threads on my phone but hate typing on touch screens so most of the time when I want to reply to something I use a PC with an actual physical keyboard lol.

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

Oh right good point, I forget that happens sometimes. I do that on my phone once in a while but I usually catch it and undo. Just edited the question to not sound pissed lol.

    Headers vs 340 manifolds

When I got my '72 Dodge truck with a 360 the exhaust manifolds were badly cracked. I put headers on instead of manifolds after seeing the Richard Holdener Dodge 360 video, fortunately since my truck is pretty high off the ground cheaper headers fit well and don't drag (went with uncoated Hedman...

Jeep exhaust Manifolds instead of headers, are these the large opening manifolds?

One other thing to note with long-tube headers is the secondary tuned length is very important... you want to keep the same pipe diameter as the header collectors as far back as possible, necking it down right after the collectors kills a good bit of torque below peak. This also applies to...

Jeep exhaust Manifolds instead of headers, are these the large opening manifolds?

Right I didn't word that great, more like 20-30 lb-ft across the board and 30hp PEAK gain. It seems to run out of breath somewhat around 5800 RPM. I have the shorty headers currently and not only are those mediocre at best themselves but I feel like the tiny 2 1/4" head pipes that snake super...

Jeep exhaust Manifolds instead of headers, are these the large opening manifolds?

Manifolds lose power everywhere compared to long tube headers but the difference isn't as much with a small cam. I have Hedman tight tubes on my Duster which fit great themselves but the outlet location sucks for routing the head pipes, bought a set of Doug's D-453 about a year ago to replace...

    Best electric cutouts?

Summit sells a vacuum-operated exhaust cutout setup I've got my eye on for my '72 D200 pickup. I'm building a 440 to swap into it and don't want to go through the trouble of having to redo the factory 2-1/4" true duals so I'm gonna run 3" collector extensions off the headers as far back as...

    Catalytic converters

Possibly, he said the first time he took it in they failed him for not having cats but then each time after that they didn't care. It has a mild 350 crate engine (from what it looks like) with long tube headers and true duals, none of which looks factory. Talking about adding cats to clean up...

    Catalytic converters

I called the Denver Air Resources Board about that, an engineer explained it's only the sale of 49-state cats that has been made illegal. If you show up to the test station with a federal converter they won't fail you because of it. The guy literally said "You could drive up to Wyoming and buy...

Doug's is carried by most parts retailers like Summit and Jegs. AutoZone also sells them, every now and then they have 15% or 20% off sales for online purchases which you can use. I bought a set of ceramic-coated D453's for my '70 Duster back in November when they were having a sale. Some...

    20% Off @ Autozone

Son of a... I just ordered some about a month ago with a 15% off sale. But it looks like they raised the prices so overall I wouldn't have saved a whole lot more anyway. I also recommend the Summit price match, I did order mine through AutoZone and had no issues but I've read stories on here...

2" to 3" exhaust... Worth it?

The kinds of things where, yeah it'll run good if you don't bother with the details, but getting the details right will give "free" benefits if you do your homework.
