    200R4 update

Got the motor ready to go as soon as the weather warms a bit. The only video i have of the dyno is on Facebook on the builders page. Check out Wheeler Racing Engines and his videos. He mistakenly posted mine as a 409.

No, I went to a 9" 3800 stall that quickened my tunes up quite a bit.

    200R4 update

Just because I haven't updated this in forever, I did have to rebuild the 200 4R after 7 years of abuse. the front pump was going and I was about two hard shifts from breaking a bunch of internals according to my friend who rebuilt it. I went with a PTC 3800 stall at that time and gained about...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

I use a high torque mini starter. I bought one online, and when it failed I found one fromn a Durango that fits perfectly. The nose cone just barely clears, but it stays stationary so it wasn't an issue. I got it from NAPA, part # 2446678.

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

My flexplate came with the adapter as well. I originally went with a 10" non lock up 2700 stall converter as recommended by Art Carr. After having the transmission rebuilt a year or so ago, I called PTC and had them build a 3500 stall. The whole transmission works better now and I ran 3/10ths of...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

Mine came with the TCI adapter. I huge square piece of billet that was drilled for all the proper holes, but not cut to shape. I mounted the motor and tranny on the floor, sprayed paint around it to give me the form and cut it down myself.

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

I bought mine from Art Carr. I got the transmission, torque converter, super servo, tv bracket and adapter plate including shipping for $3300. I got the mid range built transmission good up to 750 horsepower. Additionally I had to buy some steel to make a crossmember and a few nuts and bolts...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

When I made my crossmember I needed to use a GM tranny mount to fit the transmission. I made it adjustable so I could shim it up or down to get the proper pinion angle. I'm glad i did because I had to play a bit to get it the correct angle.

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

Mine was built to take up to 750 hp. I know a couple guys running 1000 hp Grand Nationals that run 200 4R and have no issues. They are plenty strong. I have just over 500 hp and I beat the living **** out of mine. Burnouts, rolling burnouts, track racing, street racing, etc... Mine lasted five...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

Set that TV correctly. Wide open throttle, the TV should be all the way back. I've had leakage problems on mine the last couple years. Had to rebuild it last year due to leaking through the vent, worn clutches, etc. Still have a bit of leakage this year. going to try a catch can. I beat the hell...

    Transmission Lines and Compression fittings

Compression fittings should only be used if there is no other way in my book. Granted, there isn't much pressure, but if you have the ability to flare lines, that would be the best way.

Stumped by a Strange Sound or Vibration

Why would anything suddenly go bad? Everything works until it doesn't. Does the noise change when you turn the wheel? Could be a bearing issue. Could be a lot of things. Going to have to start narrowing it down some.

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

Well, we got it back in and it drove great. I wasn't smoking anymore. At the advice of my builder buddy, I ran the vent tube down the side of the transmission like they used to do when they had problems in the 80's. Every time I put it on the hoist it was damp in that area, but no drips and no...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

My builder told me the same thing. The clutches have been soaking since yesterday morning so I think I'm okay, though I will go easy on it for the ride home. I'm forty miles from work. It's going to be hard, but I'll drive nice. I've got it on the alignment rack now. I can see I have to crank up...

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

I had to shim the converter to the flexplate. They want it pulled away from the transmission at least 1/8 and no more than 3/16. Since I have the TCI adapter plate I needed to shim it. I just got it all in late Saturday night, filled it and bolted down the converter with the longer bolts I...

Can a 67 mustang driveshaft work on a 67 barracuda with the Chrysler a-833

I have had three driveshafts built. I can say with certainty that they work well and look great. I can also say with certainty that they aren't cheap. If you build one to run on the track and add the 1350 yokes and such, it is a pretty penny but will last the life of the car ... hopefully.

200-4R Behind a 340 and Reid Bellhousing Build

Nice! I have had mine in for five hard years and it finally gave me trouble this year. I had it rebuilt and I just got the message that it is done and I am putting it back in this weekend. I have spent so much money on my Dart and this transmission is by far the best money I have spent. No...

Can a 67 mustang driveshaft work on a 67 barracuda with the Chrysler a-833

If you put that thing in, your first burnout will spin out of control and you'll drive through a crowd.

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

It's a tough transmission. I know two people with Grand Nationals putting out over 1000 hp and they have no problems. I have seen inside it and other than the 8 clutch pack as opposed to 6 it is like any other transmission. It has a few different springs and a few check valves are removed, It...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

I don't drive it as much now, but the first summer I put on 11,000 miles. It had overdrive so I could drive on the highway. Between race gas and 93 octane I spent $8000 in gas that summer. My problem is I live 40 miles from anything, so I put on virtually 100 miles anytime I drive it. But ... I...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

UPDATE: So, I left it up to my buddy to decide if he should tear down the tranny or just do the pump that he suspected was the problem. He tore it down after seeing some clutch material in the pan. I was apparently a few stop signs from grenading the damn thing. The band was so close to dropping...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

The bolts holding the torque converter to the flex plate came loose and rounded out the holes on both the converter and the flex plate. It was blowing out the vent as far as I could tell. It's squeezed in pretty tight. It appeared to run down the passenger side of the housing, hit the top edge...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

When I found them loose, I was doing a burnout and it started banging hard and loud. I found out the next day what it was and used nylon locknuts that held very well. In fact, I had a hard time getting them off when I removed the transmission. What is it I wrote that makes no sense? I don't have...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

The vent is on top of the case, but it runs inside and into the pump, or so I'm told. Hell, I know how to spell transmission, but that's as far as my expertise goes. All in all the 200-4R has been awesome. The way I drive this car it should break every time I drive it. I race on the street and...

    Finally pulled the 200-4R

As a lot of you know, I put a 408 stroker and a 200-4R overdrive in my Dart about 4 years ago. Late last year and all this year I've had intermittent leaking problems. It appeared to be pushing out the vent, usually on hot days. I called the builder, Art Carr (who, by the way, is an f-ing idiot)...

Leaking issues in my 200 4R - any gurus available?

The transmission shop had the car all day and called at 4:30 to say "come and get it!" I asked what it was and he said it was just overfull. I said no way. I've checked the level 50 times minimum in the last month. He swore that's all it was. I picked it up and got to the exact same spot I did...
