    Headers?

If you want loud and obnoxious, go with the 40 series flowmaster. They're even louder if you dump the pipes right behind the mufflers (no tailpipes). There are plenty of other loud and obnoxious muffler's out there, but I've only had experience with flowmaster and magnaflow. Both can be very...

    Headers?

I had 2.25" behind my 318 with long-tube Hedman headers. And for the record, those headers were absolute garbage. I think anything larger than 2.25" is overkill for a stock 318.

    Hard starting when cold

That's a very good question. I never really checked my carb to see what the fuel looks like coming out of the jets. My only guess is that once your car is running, it fills up the bowls fully (or whatever the float setting allows); this in turn gives you a much more consistent stream because...

    Hard starting when cold

There isn't really a gasket issue when removing the top of the carb to check the bowl levels. I do it all the time. However, I've done a few carb rebuilds in a 5 year span so the gaskets really were not in bad shape. You really won't know what the problem is until you pop that top and take a...

    Hard starting when cold

When was the last time you rebuilt the carb? How much fuel is in the bowls of the carb after you let it sit? Evaporation will happen, but as long as there is fuel under the accelerator pump, the engine should start with a few pumps before cranking. You should check the accelerator pump for a...

67Dart, I must be blind, you mentioned the accelerator pump in your previous post as one possibility. My bad...

    Hard starting when cold

This may be grasping at straws, but worth consideration... Remove the accelerator pump from the carb. How much fuel is in the column? Sometimes the leather on the pump dries up and doesn't make a good seal. This can lead to fuel evaporation, which in turn can make it harder to start the car...

    opinion: 2 bbl vs 4bbl : stock 318

Any pics of the intake your buddy gave you? If you're looking for a little extra power, go ahead with the 4 bbl upgrade. As mentioned above, I would also go with a Performer instead of the intake you're talking about. If you don't plan on switching the cam to something better than stock, I...

    318 Troubleshoot

Checking the timing is a good starting point. Then again, it could be so many other things causing this. Just make a checklist and keep crossing stuff off as you troubleshoot.

What fuel should I run in my 340?

I'm running 87 in my '68 273. No detonation with timing at TDC.

    Header Gasket Water Leak

Is this a problem unique only to L.A. Block engines/heads from Chrysler? i.e. water jacket's under the bolt holes? I had the same problem on my old 318, could never quite seal the bolt threads with sealant. Using studs on the end's, now that is probably what I should have done.

    318 hesitation when cold

When the car is cold, the butterfly valve should be nearly shut. Sounds like you need to adjust your choke.

Is the butterfly valve closed or open when you start it cold?

    273 won't start regularly

Which carburetor do you have? How much fuel is in the bowls when you take the top of the carb off? Do you have a timing light?

    273 won't start regularly

Have you checked the timing with a timing light? I've never used the method you mention for checking the timing on an engine. I wonder if it matters. Points or electronic ignition? I recently had a similar problem with my 273. Car would not start regularly, ended up having to replace the...

    318 power

You will know when those 2 extra barrels kick in. Listen to the engine when you stomp on the gas. The best way I could hear mine open up was when driving up a long fairly steep hill. At about 40 mph, stomp on the gas. It will kick down into second, but once it gets into third play with the...
