727 low gear set - worth the investment?

I watched Darin Rumpel pull them out of a late '60s light dump truck tranny at Sharadon Performance myself.

727 low gear set - worth the investment?

    Go with steeper rear gears.

    rearend length

'68 Newport eh? That is good info to have around. Maybe they started using the tapered ones in '69. One other interesting thing about this 300 was the thrid member was a 489 case. It must have been a late build car.

    rearend length

I have a C-body rear from a '69 Chrysler 300 in my barn. I have it just for an extra housing to cut down for a narrowed rear. The axles from the C-body will not work if you want to cut them down and respline them as they are tapered. A friend of mine grabbed the axles, and sent them to Moser...

A 833 vs Toploader vs Muncie (rockcrusher)

No, it is a drag race only, very close ratio, Xtra heavy duty, 18-spline slickshift gearset that was available from Chrysler for their race programs from '69 or '70-ish on. Mostly used in the old Prostock cars. I found a gearset, and bought a car to put the gears in.

A 833 vs Toploader vs Muncie (rockcrusher)

I thought that might have been the thread. Anyway, yes I think the A833 was a real gem. As far as Toploaders go, I grew up in Ford and Chevy country, and there were alot of nice cars around that had Toploaders. I've helped with a couple of rebuuilds on 4-speeds, and I've rebuilt several of the...

A 833 vs Toploader vs Muncie (rockcrusher)

Yea, there were flex problems with the case. They reworked the case twice that I know of, and the latest, the "supercase" is supposed to have taken care of that. I don't know if that is true since that happened after I moved into Mopars.

A 833 vs Toploader vs Muncie (rockcrusher)

I'm guessing I may have been involved in the thread you read. I started out with Pontiacs in the late '70s, and moved into Mopars because of chronic 4-speed transmission problems. I make no excuses about being a big A833 fan, and in my opinion the 18-spline hemi 4-speed is the strongest of the...

    Tranny doesn't fit, now what

OUCH! From your previous posts, I thought it was a 4-speed. Never even considered you have an OD with all the drag racing talk. Sorry to hear about the setback.

    Tranny doesn't fit, now what

Most likely he has a 308L bearing retainer on a 23-spline. I'm also guessing an early bell which accepts a 307L bearing retainer. I would swap out the front case with one that uses a 307, or I would have a machine shop enlarge the hole in the bell to fit the retainer. Don't turn the retainer...

    71 Demon 340, 3 speed or 4

I've owned several 5-speeds, and currently own a Shelby with a 5-speed. If you drive your cars in overdrive everywhere, then I guess a 5-speed is right up your alley.

    8 3/4 or ford 9 in.

I agree. I chose the 742, for my narrowed 4.56 spool with Mosers best axles. It is a bullet proof rear, but not 1000 hp bulletproof.

    8 3/4 or ford 9 in.

My brother-in-laws blown aluminum Hemi makes 1080 hp run through a Jerico 4-speed in a leaf spring '69 Charger R/T. That is about as rough as you can get on a rear. He has the stock Dana 60 with strange axles.

D60/4:10 locker in a street car?

Detroit Lockers were factory equipent in go-fast Mercurys and Fords. They work just fine on the street. (Fantastic in my opinion.) They are nothing like a spool. (which I am running now) And they are a superior diff with the only issues being noise, weight, and cost. You bought a car that is...

    71 Demon 340, 3 speed or 4

Stoplight to stoplight, a 5-speed is a waste of time, and money. I started out with a GM heavy duty 3-speed, and the shift points were very friendly to a street race. Not so much on the track, but the old Dearborn built 3-speed was a FAR heavier duty piece than the crappy Muncie that could...

That could be a factory balance. I have half a dozen driveshafts and a couple are weighted like that.

If it sheared at the rear end, you may need to check into that rear. It sounds like the problem originated there.

Drilling axles small bolt to big bolt safe?

The Mosers in my narrowed rear came with 3 patterns drilled. They are still light years stronger than factory.

    340 T/A Demon??

Barry had trouble with my T/A motor. He said that it was too early for a T/A by a couple months. It had a VIN, and the build matched the casting date, but the VIN was in between the pilot cars, and the first VIN he had on record. Since this motor lived its life less than a half mile from White...

Well if you are going to butcher an A-body by putting in B-body parts, you can simply use the offset shackles reversed.
