expert help needed (my first post)

I didn't read all the post completely through, but from what I saw of the photos you posted that looks like a really clean engine. I would run a hone through it and re-ring it. If the main and rod bearings look good use them over. I know a 273 isn't fast, but you can get it running better for...

    Aftermarket block street strokers.

When you go with the 4.500" stroke crankshaft and use a 7.100" long connecting rod you'll end up with a compression height of of 1.355" Anything shorter than that and I personally wouldn't want them on a street engine with a 4.500" diameter piston. I always ask my customers do you want to try...

    Trickflow trackheat or performer rpm

Mine will go well past 6200 rpm with the combination of parts I have in it, but it's a street car and I have reason to wind it anymore than that. I am running a heavily ported Victor with lots of plenum work, a dimpled pyramid in the floor, and 1" Jomar 5016X tapered Power Cone spacer on top...

Valves 11/32" Stems, Big Block Heads

Since I can no longer correct my above post I need to make a correction here. SI valves are not made in China. They have been sourced from Argentina for the last 15-years according to the conversation I had with SI a few months ago. In the very early days they were sourced from China, but no one...

    440source rockers now available

60 years ago when Mopar designed them they didn't have cam profiles and spring pressures they do now, but if you think they are okay then use them. However, if you really care about your rocker arm alignment ditch the springs and put solid spacers in. Tom

    440source rockers now available

Personally I would never buy a set, but I suppose for a milder build they might be okay. However I would strongly suggest to getting rid of the springs and install solid spacer in between the rockers. You do not want the variable alignment those springs provide. Tom

What’s the best rods for the build

There is no way a 50 to 60 year old factory rod is better than a new 4340 H-beam regardless of where you buy it at. Metallurgy is superior in new rods to OEM rods, larger diameter bolts, cap screw bolts clamp tighter, and a lot of aftermarket rods are lighter than OEM. Now if you buy a Molnar...

Best dual plane intake for 400 low deck

Edelbrock Performer is what I would be looking for. Others have mentioned the DP4B, but I'll tell you to avoid it because they are old and they alloy they used back then is soft. Viton vs Teflon valve seals

If the heads are cut for PC seals absolutely go with Viton. I don't use either for double springs on 3/8" stock valve guide tops that I don't want to cut. I am not that big a fan of PC seals and I like the guides to get a little more oil. One particular set of double springs I use has a .700"...

Running Main Bearing Inserts To use A 383 Journal Crank In a 440 Block

Well if that were true the millions of 400 SBC blocks that used/ using inserts to allow the use of the 350 main cranks would have not last 40 years. Those Saturday night stock car and bracket racing engine have flourished at much higher RPM's than required for my intended uses. Tom

Running Main Bearing Inserts To use A 383 Journal Crank In a 440 Block

    452 heads cc's

Those chamber volumes vary not because the head is cut wrong. They vary because of the slight differences when the sand cores were put together at the foundry. If you want them all the same you're going to need to do some grinding in the chambers to equal them out. Tom

    452 heads cc's

If you're asking because you want to raise the compression on a late model 440 that has the pistons .155" in the hole don't bother to mill them. You won't gain enough to make it worthwhile even at a .060" cut. Plus you'll need new pushrods too. Tom

Direct Connection Big Block Valve Covers (Rare)?

I love the blue aluminum valve covers, but they just aren't worth the trouble to use them unless you never drive the car or remove the covers. Like several have already mentioned they are really easy to bend and hard to keep from leaking since you can't apply hardly any torque to the bolts...

    Trickflow trackheat or performer rpm

It really doesn't matter which intake you use. You're never going to get traction with that combination anyway. But, for argument sake the Performer RPM will produce more torque throughout the RPM range than the Track Heat will. That said, I run a ported Victor on my street 499" RB and it still...

400/426 Stroker. Ever heard of one?

There have been thousands of 400 blocks built into 470's using offset 440 crankshafts (that's what you did 30-40 years ago) no issues with using a BBC rod that creates .018" extra rod clearance. I see no reason that it won't workout fine. This engine will easily spin another 1000 rpms before it...

    383/489 Stroker

Having done engines for longer than I care to admit and what I find is people over cam and under head engines. Very few heads have the port volume to support the size of valves that are in even stock heads, let alone heads that have large valves. Cams are not the issue with 90% of builds I...

    528 stroker build windage tray?

The idea of a windage try and even a scraper like used on a lot of SBC engines is to strip the oil off of counter weights. Thus reducing the "windage" of oil that's clinging to the crank. In the case of the windage tray it also helps with not whipping up the oil in the oil pan. Although with a...
