    8 1/4 diff with 2.45 gears

Can anyone tell me how many teeth were used on the ring & pinions of the 2.45 and 2.26 gear sets?

That there is the whole reason that I and cosgig (probably) prefer to stay away from crush sleeves. If you need to replace the pinion seal or remove the yoke for some reason, you have the chance of messing up the pinion depth. Changing the seal can be done without changing the pinion depth if...

    What options for O/D behind a S/6?

I am thinking of the same possibilities. Is it possible to convert a /6 trans to use 999/998 trans guts? Or else, how possible would it be to get a 999 to bolt up to a /6? I assume that these transmissions have small V8 bolt patterns. Is there an adapter? That would at least get you: 1...

    8 3/4 question

It can be shortened to use in an A-body but make sure the axles are 4.5" bolt pattern so that the brakes will match when you are done. Otherwise you will need to purchase brake backing plates & drums too. It will cost around $150 to shorten + $100 for new ends + $50 for pad mounts & welding +...

    8 3/4 question

A 742 case is a good strong unit that uses a rebuildable clutch style sure grip if it has one. I like them better than the slightly stronger 489 because they don't use a crush sleeve for the pinion setting. To tell if it is a sure grip, turn one axle. If the other axle turns in the same...

    Pushbutton Modification?

You could design your own and have a custom cable house make it for you. You could even make it stronger than the original style. That is how I plan to do the cable on my '56. If you need some specialized connector on the top end, you could make it yourself and send it to them to keep the costs...

    Overdrive Options

Is the mileage change that you are quoting from the highway/freeway or stop and go driving? An overdrive will not help stop and go, in fact, it might make it a little worse. But it should improve your freeway mileage even if you are geared too high. Example: I saw a nice improvement when I...

    Lockup Converter in Older 727?

Other information I found is that *at least* the input shaft, reaction shaft, valve body, converter, output shaft, driving shell and possibly the front clutch drum are all specific to the lockup version. It may be possible to use the older output shaft, but I'm not sure at what point old stuff...

    Lockup Converter in Older 727?

Wow, I didn't know they were that rare. I expected to see them more on the early 80's Diplomat cop car etc, but I guess most of those would use the 998 or 999. I am building this trans for my '68 383-S Barracuda. I don't want to mess with the sheet metal at all on this relatively rare car, so...

    Lockup Converter in Older 727?

I am trying to build this trans with a short tailshaft from a van. These big block van transmissions are not very easy to find so that is why I am asking. But it sounds like I will need to obtain a newer transmission and swap the guts into the van. So what years came with lockup? I assume that I...

    Lockup Converter in Older 727?

I am wondering if it is possible to use a lockup converter in an older big block 727 trans. What all would need to be swapped to make it work? Which year 727 transmissions came with lockup? Also thinking of swapping to the lower gearset at the same time. Thanks.

    Don't use these a$&holes!!!!

I try to do most auto work myself so I can avoid issues, but I took an A-body 8 3/4 in to http://performance-gearing.com/ in Azusa (So. Cal) to replace a bad bearing end. He assured me that he would get it welded to the same length as original. When I got it home and measured, it was 1/4"...

    Whats everyone running for gears?

I had 3.23's with a 340 4-speed and 26" tires and it got 15 mpg at 70 mph on the freeway, which is where I drive it most of the time. I pulled them and put in a poor-man's overdrive - 2.76's with 28" tires and now it gets 19-20 mpg. Big improvement and I can actually talk to my family too. Only...

Welding that 1/4" plate to the tunnel floor is where most of the strength comes in because it is being supported by the floor. The thickness of the material does very little and is mostly extra weight. It is also difficult to get good weld penetration when you weld dramatically different...

This is an interesting site that backs up Tjfly4pay's experience: http://smrtrans.tripod.com/smrtransmissionsintro/id21.html They say: "That A500 or A518 transmission in your Mopar is consuming enough horsepower over one of our fully prepared 904s or 727 to cost you up to 1 1/2 SECONDS in...

put in 8 3/4, now have vibration

Also, I am not certain, but it looks like your yoke is made for the big joint. Take the joint out from the driveshaft and try fitting the larger end into the yoke. If it fits well, you should use a standard 7290 (big) joint. I think that is all it could be as the 1350 stuff uses U-bolts instead...

    Overdrive Options

Yeah, that or the gear vendor. However, I have been told that in order to put a gear vendor into an A-body, you have to use the short tailshaft 727 transmission from a ?van?. If you use the standard length transmission, the driveshaft will end up being too short and will give you bad vibes. I...

put in 8 3/4, now have vibration

Sounds like you may have a 7260 small joint on your driveshaft in a large joint 7290 pinion. If so, just purchase a conversion joint that has a small end for your driveshaft and a big end for your pinion. Also make sure that the straps you are using are for the right size u-joint.

I did just that... but it wasn't in an A body. I put a 700-R4 into a B-body and spent only $760 - total including the driveshaft. I also didn't have to cut the floor or the torsion bar brace at all. Unfortunately, the A-body is too short to make it work out this easy though :( But, you could...

65-66 Mustang Diff into 1967 Dart

An annoyance with running a '64-'66 Mustang 8" axle is that they have a tapered axle housing. It gets small right where they bolt to the springs and uses small bearings. You have to use small U-bolts and the Ford plates to hold it. The old '57 9" like yours (and others) doesn't have this problem...

    8 3/4 for 1971 Duster

The only ones that are a direct bolt in are the Mopar A-body and Ford Mustang/Maverick rears. There are 8 1/4 A-body rears that you can use from '73-'76 that will give you big bolt pattern if you wish to convert it. Ford 8" and 9" rears from a mustang or maverick will bolt in and give you big...

    Whats your transmission suggestions?

Because the gear vendors cost around $2600 or so + rebuild back end of trans, and the 700R4 is FREE + $500 for adapter if I can make it work. I ask the question about the 200-4R to see if it would be even easier.

    Whats your transmission suggestions?

Can you be more specific about what cross member fab and how much is required to fit the 200-4R? Keisler uses the 4L60E which is a derivative of the 700-R4, so I was looking at possibly using the 700-R4 instead. It has an anoying round module in the way of the crossmember though. (see...
