Yes. I agree. However you can only adjust for so much.

Update: Some of the rockers were not centered over the valve stems due to incorrect spacing. Pretty sure the pushrods were too long because the cups were digging into the rocker at adjusters. I have since purchased an adjustable pushrod length checker. I also think the lash was off because he...

    Recommended pushrods

I have bought new valve springs for my 340. I am running the Comp Cams X-treme energy solid roller .570" cam. My question is will 5/16" pushrods be strong enough or do I need 3/8"? Thanks for the helpful advice y'all always provide.

That would probably be best. However, aside from two broken springs and 13 bent pushrods everything else seems to be okay. I am replacing all valve springs and stronger pushrods. If things still are not right, then I will pull motor and start over. There is always the option to pull motor. In...

Here is #1 exhaust and intake valve patterns. I pulled the rockers off to check things out.

He won't be touching it anymore. However, we are friends. He is a good guy, and can machine his *** off. Just not careful with things. He lacks that special touch these old cars require.

Let me clarify that valves were only adjusted once. That was during the final assembly of motor. Valve lash was never set after that. Also, yesterday I did see the number 8 exhaust valve had rotated 180* I could tell because of the wear mark on tip of valve stem.

The 'Cuda was running fine after valve lash was set. So, that probably isn't it. We learned yesterday that the rockers were contacting the retainers. One rocker had a very deep gouge in it. However, that had been going on before pushrods bent and motor was running strong. The main reason I am at...

I will post the spring specs tomorrow. One thing I have learned is about spring pockets. Judging by my picture is mine appears to be lacking clearance.

Trying not to wear out my welcome here. Would y'all examine this pic closely? It sure looks like the spring is not compressed evenly to me.

    Bent up stuff

Read a great article describing coil binding on springs from Lunati. Seems to describe what happened to me. Don't know if this helps but I was examining the springs and the ones that appeared to be in a bind were not compressed evenly. In other words, the spring gap was tight in front and sides...

I see what you are talking about. The roller tip is even and spins smoothly though. He didn't contact it with the die grinder.

Now I understand the geometry. However, that also takes me back to coil bind as the culprit. I am listening and really appreciating everything y'all are helping me with. A lot to take in though! I am definitely going to do my own valve geometry checking from this point on.

    Bent up stuff

I understand, but why would the geometry call for longer pushrods if a bigger cam is installed? I was running shorter pushrods with a smaller hydraulic cam.

    Bent up stuff

So far I have not pulled the heads to look. I did fill the cylinders up with air using my compression gauge. No air escaping was heard. All but three pushrods are bent which makes no sense. However, I also discovered that some of the roller rockers are contacting the springs. So, is this what...

Why would there be metal everywhere?
  24. VonCramp

    Bent up stuff

The roller tips isn't flattened. It's just discolored. There shouldn't be metal everywhere. Some members are mistaking where we had to hit the rockers with a die grinder to clearance them for the valve springs as metal on metal. I was just trying to show where the rocker had contacted the...

They are not exactly chewed up. The silver is from using a die grinder to clearance around the valve springs. However the deep groove cut in is from it digging into the spring.

New problem. The rockers were digging into the springs. He thought he had clearance them enough but they were digging into the valve springs. As you can see the pro comp rockers are so thick it is hard to get them to clear.

I remember trying to figure out the exact length and he said you have adjustable rockers so there is room to play around. So, he ordered 7.250 I believe which are actually way too long judging by my bound up springs.

I In all fairness I feel like this wasn't exactly my screw up other than trusting someone who I perceived as to knowing what they were doing. Since I don't know very much about valvetrain geometry, I employed the help of my local machinist where they machine race motors. Seemed totally...
