    Shot-Peening

I remember after grinding/polishing my 273 connecting rods smooth and shiny (back in the 1970's) I sent them out to be shot-peened. When they came back, the surface was more like sand paper.

    Demon 340 vs Camaro 396 (400)

Many Chevy guys called the BB 402 the 400. GM even put the 400 emblems on some cars. Many also continued to call it the 396. but in 70 GM actually gave the 396 engine a .032 larger bore, thus making it actually 402cu in. It is the same engine Chevy put in the 71 Chevelle SS . I had a 71 BB 402...

    Another UTG bottle rocket update

I am beginning to believe UT is a little delusional. He's explanation about his slow shift to second is way out there, not to mention his explanation of the poor throttle response. I never had any of those problems to begin with when using slicks, a 4.56 rear end, full synchro Mopar four-speed...

Tire smoke Saturday. Light em up

Sonoma Raceway where I ran my stock '72 Satellite 318 against my step-daughters 2004 Toyota 4Runner twice. Do I least get an "A" for effort? (I was ahead there for a couple of seconds but sorry, no smoke)

Dumb things that you did.......because you didn't know any better.

I was storing a Harley Davidson for a relative and went out to start it up for a few minutes to charge the battery. There was a set screw on the throttle, so I set up a fast idle. While it was running/charging, I got distracted and went about doing something else. When I returned to the garage...

Dumb things that you did.......because you didn't know any better.

I innocently took an apartment neighbor out to dinner (for the first time) on my birthday because my wife was out of town. When we got back to our respective apartments, I said thank you and good night, but she walked over to my apartment door (instead of her own) and just stood there. After a...

What's the slowest car you've raced in the 1/4 ?

Sonoma Raceway and ran a couple of time trials against my step-daughter who was driving a 2004 Toyota 4Runner with a 4.0L V-6 rated at 270 HP @ 5600 RPM. She beat me by about 2 seconds. I ran 18.37 @ 75.37 MPH and 18.41 @ 75.79 (shifter in "Drive" and not hitting 3rd gear until right past the...

    Guess my horsepower/et

    That's hard to say. Wild guess 460-475 horsepower @ 6400 RPM? I don't know (no less than 415). 11.9 ET @ 120 MPH.

Reasons Your Vehicle Did Not Pass Tech Inspection?

Before my '65 Valiant four door 273 become an all out bracket racer, I drove up to Fremont Raceway (80 miles one-way) circa 1973 to run it pure stock in two-barrel form, street tires, 7 1/4 rear end. I was turned away when the tech inspector found I had no seat belts. I believe in '65 seat...

    Kevko oil pans?

Let me just mention the fact that on my '65 Valiant Bracket racer I used the larger lower control arm stops (see first foto) to help protect the rear-sump ten quart oil pan (with steering link tunnel) from getting smashed. If you look carefully (in the second foto), you can see how I painted...

    Front skinny tire question

I ran the VW tires on my '65 Valiant bracket racer. I believe the speed rating on tires is more related to cruising at high speeds taking into consideration heat build-up. My trap speed was 108 mph, which I only held for one or two seconds. That does not stress the tire much.

    Saturday at the Races

The Duster at launch, I could not see the body over the rear tire/axle lift up or squat down. Usually a stock suspension will squat and super stock springs will lift the rear suspension. To me it looked real solid back there (obviously it works however it is set up).

Won my first bracket race and it was CLOSE

Congratulations! Interesting how consistent we can be sometimes. (I won a $10.00 bonus back in the day by running two consecutive E.T. runs EXACTLY the same to the hundredth of a second--'65 Valiant with 273 and four-speed).

Post the favorite small block combo you have had, and why

Street legal '65 Valiant 273 four door ran best of 12.72 @ 108 mph. Stock cylinder heads, commando pistons, Isky cam, 600 CFM Holley DP, A-833, 4.56 8 3/4 rear end with 10 inch slicks. My favorite childhood book was "The Little Engine That Could".

    SAW THIS AT O'RILEYS

In that case, seems prudent to install an oil temperature gauge in the bottom of the oil pan. I had one installed in my parents showroom new 1971 Road Runner. I remember the oil temp took way longer to normalize than the coolant temp. I forget what the normal oil temp was, i know it was 20-30...

    SAW THIS AT O'RILEYS

That's funny, when warmed up to operating temperature 10-30 and straight 30 should have the same viscosity, that's what the second number "30" means. The "10" would be a thinner viscosity when cold. Therefore, in my opinion, quicker elapsed times with 10-30 versus straight 30 don't jive with the...

    SAW THIS AT O'RILEYS

Back in '72, I asked my parent's mechanic to use Penzoil racing oil (20w-40) when he serviced their new '71 Road Runner. It wasn't until many years later I found that racing oils are non-detergent (to prevent foaming), maybe not the best for a daily driver.

904 6 bolt crank flexplate internal balance

Looking at reviews on Summit for about five versions of the "mini-starter" there were many negative comments regarding installation--mainly how terminals had been located too close to block and grinding necessary to put socket on...
