    Downshifting is really useful if you are going really fast in the twisties....and double clutching sounds really cool if you have a loud exhaust but moparlover is correct, it's cheaper to change pads/shoes/drums/rotors than to change gear clusters and clutch plates.

    Not sure about American cars but you only really need the clutch for starting off, usually in first. As long as you are off the throttle, the trans should shift. I would say you have a problem.
