down shifting

you can also just use the brakes more... it will lengthen the life of the trans

downshifting will slow you down, but if you go too low you can actually cause the back tires to break loose... like above post where he went into 1st accidentally. if he didnt catch it and over-revved it also over-revs the clutch, which can lead to that coming apart as well. i remember reading a story about a guy that was coming down a mountain in low gear in a jeep, music blasting not paying attention it rev'ed over 10 grand and blew his clutch lol.

downshifting works but it's hard on the trans if you do it a lot. it's useful to know how in case you have a brake failure though. you can take it down to 3rd then slow down to 2nd and get it into first .... then at an idle you are almost stopped and then you can safely coast to a stop. you wouldnt want to do this constantly. it's cheaper to change pads/shoes/drums/rotors than to change gear clusters :D

Downshifting is really useful if you are going really fast in the twisties....and double clutching sounds really cool if you have a loud exhaust but moparlover is correct, it's cheaper to change pads/shoes/drums/rotors than to change gear clusters and clutch plates.
