Making The Weak 7-1/4 Rear Axle Live... Kinda

If you can keep one wheel from spinning and then grabbing traction you might get it to last a long time. I've tore the spiders out of a bunch of 7-1/4 rears but it was always spinning a wheel, whether on ice and snow or an in an activity that could get me an exhibition of acceleration ticket.

    1965 Barracuda speedometer confusion

62 to 65 use the style cable you have. Your replacement is mostly likely one to fit 66 and newer. The 62- 65 are not easily found in good condition, but make a wanted post and I'll bet someone can help you out.

    Rear End Gears

If the 3.23s are in t I'd run those and see how it feels. If it's good to go, you got lucky. If it's a little tiny bit off you can always switch to the 3:55 at any time and if it is way off, then you know you will need to get into the 3.91 or 4.10 range. All of the facts and figures are great...

Anything wrong with the 8-3/4 "741" case?

You have already mentioned the biggest problem with the 741. That being parts availability. It is supposedly the weakest of the three styles so it wasn't as well supported. I know of several 741s being beaten on severely including one of my own that never broke. If you have one, by all means...

    273/904 torque converter

The register (snout) is different diameter for the 67/68 and later torque converters. Chrysler increased the diameter. So a 67 later will not fit the early crank register. (The early torque converter can be used in a 68 an later engine with the help of a spacer ring though). Hope this helps.....

Push Start a Torqueflite For Me

62 to 65 Torqueflites have a rear pump so they can be push or pull started. We just did it with a 65 Dart last summer to show the owner it could be done.

    7 1/4 or 8 1/4 by sight?

Yes, 7-1/4 did come as a sure grip, but not very many. They are considerably stronger as a sure grip too. I've got one in a 64 Barracuda that has survived and I've torn up a bunch of one leggers.

I'm number 181 on the list for an A855 and was told a few weeks ago that I'm probably still a year from delivery. So, they aren't quickly available. I've heard his list is currently up to around 400.

    Who's in the "I broke a 7.25" club?

I'm a multi time member. I've got seven broken ones piled behind my Dad's garage. That is probably half of the ones I've ripped the spider gear shafts out of over the last forty years. Managed to tear 'em up with everything from stock 225s to built 340s.

I've called him. I'm 181 on his list. At this time he can't provide any estimate for when a five speed will be available for me. What can the 7.25 handle?

I have had a few last for a decent amount of time but discovered that the 7-1/4 cannot stand to have one wheel spin and then get sudden traction. The pinions and cross shaft rip right out of the case. I live in an area that gets ice and snow throughout the winter and have a pile of seven...
