    Advice on buying junkyard engines?

I"ve bought 4 engines from salvage sources. 2 came with 30 day warranty. I borescope the cylinders. Pull a valve cover to look at the amount of sludge build up. Look for clues of abuse or hack maintenance. The 2 engines with warranty; I installed them and drove it. Really didn't do much for...

Installing new timing chain on a 318, questioning the oil slinger

just my 2 cents and this will probably start a keyboard war but.... if you replace the oil pump, don't put a high volume pump on it.

    Oil filter for 340

I've seen oil filter comparison reviews on Youtube. All the reviews were of Fram's low cost filter. I noticed Fram has a Titanium line, recently. The cost of these is about $12, about the same as Wix. Does anyone know if maybe Fram stepped up their game? P.S. I use Mobil 1 filters.

318 runs real load and shakes like crazy

The cranking hesitation looks to me to be too much initial timing. Also, it may be an optical illusion but looking at the plug wires at the distributor, I think you have cylinder 7 and 4 transposed. Could be just an illusion.

    318 Motor, please help

Hey, we've all been there at one time or another. Not an idiot. However, I question your sanity with this statement: "practically ran my wife over to head out to the garage...". That'll cost you in the long run. :poke::)

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

I think that the radiator is significantly cooler is key. You are not getting enough coolant flow. AJ, earlier said, aluminum heads will 'suck the heat out' at idle. If the top end is overheating and you can grab the lower hose and it's a comfortable temp. , I think you have a flow problem...

    340 with edelbrock heads overheating

You didn't mention it, I'm assuming you verified with an IR gun or some other method that you do actually have an overheat situation. How are you measuring temp.? Factory or aftermarket panel gauge? Yes, a blown head gasket can pump hot air into the coolant system and not mix with the oil.

Thank you all for your replies. C130 Chief, I don't trust modern aftermarket automotive parts.

318 Main bearing part numbers versus year application

I'm looking at buying some NOS main bearings for a '75 318. The part number listed for sale is 4397777. The listing indicates for a '60-'69 318. Could those bearings be used in the '75 engine?

    Mission Impossible 318

Broke 15 year olds. How about broke adults?:) You are exactly right, the hobby must be fun and accessible to continue. I remember those scrapyard scores and even today. ( general comment: ) I can't afford a stroker crank, new rods, pistons, associated machine work. I"ve run 318's because that's...

Yes. Never tried it myself but, there is an explanation on Uncle Tony's Garage. Youtube. Tony calls it the "keith black method."

    340 shedding piston material

Plug color was always good. Never heard detonation pinging. It did overheat when the NEW thermostat failed to open. Engine is coming out.

    340 shedding piston material

According information gathered on this forum (thanks, FABO!), the engine overheated and that caused the piston ring to butt together. The ring had nowhere to go but, up. That area of piston at the valve relief being the weakest part.

    340 shedding piston material

So, my brother's 340 wasn't quite running right. The engine was running at low rpm and he heard this tinkling sound traveling down the header pipes. We decided to borescope the engine.

LA 318 Dying when put in gear and high idle issue solved!

Hey Randall, you might want to try returning the gap back to previous setting, see how it runs and then try 0.005" again. I think that's called ABA testing - make a change from A to B, then go back to A. I've been having distributor problems off and on, so keep us posted please.

    318 stalls in Drive

Well, it's been almost a year since this thread was active. I"m slow. I know. Replace the cam, they said. It'll run fine, they said. . And of course , you guys were right. So actually it was late last summer when I got around to it. Bought a new camshaft / lifters. Made the swap in one day...

    What were they thinking?

I've seen a lot of "what were they thinking" stuff. BUT, sometimes the engineers do think of us mechs. My dad had a 1980 Datsun 310. Bottom of the line, econo-box. Front wheel drive, transverse mounted engine. A clutch change took an hour and a half, start to finish. Basic hand tools. The...

    Intake manifold install

Took the intake off an original 1970 318 engine. (40 years ago.) The end seals were not leaking. I took it apart to look at the cam/lifters. The end seals were a soft material, that was fairly stiff but, I could cut it easily. I'm guessing it was neoprene closed cell foam. Is that what you are...

    Intake manifold install

A long time ago, I used a Fel-Pro gasket set for my SBM. The set came with neoprene end gaskets. Just set in place and put the manifold down. Recently, got a Fel-Pro set with the cork. The cork was so thick that the bolt holes would not line up. Not even close. Laid a bead of RTV (1/4" in...

    Cam eccentric on 340

I saw on social media or Youtube a situation where a guy had a late model Ford truck that would vibrate severely above 65 mph. The dealership said there was nothing to be done about it. The Service Writer told the customer, "that model of Ford truck was not designed to go over 65 mph." If I can...

    Cam eccentric on 340

The oodles of Permatex is either a sign of insecurity or someone used to taking up Chevy machine tolerances. In my opinion, he needs to use a gasket. That's way too much and unnecessary use of RTV. I"ve seen excess chunks from situations like that end up clogging the drilled coolant passages...

Where to degree this cam ?

I really don't know much about setting up performance engines. My current setup is definitely not ideal. Yours seems to be properly tuned. Anyway, my too big of a cam, low compression 318 has a .484 lift, 284 duration cam that was degreed at 108, per the cam card. I had poor acceleration and...

AJ, thank you so much for taking the time to post all that. I have done what you said. Until I got to this part: And don't be clipping coils off the spring;that will really mess things up. Go find a similar spring with less pressure and clip coils off that one until it is the same length,then...
