    hughes rockers

Be sure to torque and loosen the adjuster nut half a dozen times when they are new to ensure that the nuts are fully seated. If you don't do this, one of the nuts could back off resulting in a dropped pushrod while racing an AMG Mercedes resulting in a long tow home from Monterrey.

    Advice on a 440

You will need to mock up the engine with the head gaskets you are going to use and verify the clearance. You can use clay then measure the distance between the valves and piston top. You do realize that the largest cam you can get away with may not match your combination, right? I would get...

    Machine shop 440 Mopar questions?

From what I have heard over the years, using torque plates and having the mains torqued down when boring and finish honing the cylinders makes for a lower percentage of leakage past the rings. Depending on how close the tolerance is between the pistons and cylinders now, you may still be able to...

    Stroked motor oil levels?

I remember seeing an article about how power was affected by how far the sump is from the spinning crankshaft on the Nascar Hemi's. The farther away they lowered it, the more power they got. They ended up stopping the testing at about 3 feet or something like that, as it was obviously...

505 stroker fresh off the dyno - Power seems low? Thoughs?

Did you guys do a compression test with a warm motor? What did it crank out? I am running 10.2 to 1 pistons in my 493" RB and it cranks within a few pounds either side of 200 psi in all 8. Same compression ratio pistons in my 408 magnum and nearly the identical cranking compression.

Going to Build 470 Street/Strip Engine for 71 Demon

Why not Trick Flow 270's? It looks like you are going to rev that baby up. I would talk to Dwayne Porter for the heads and cam, Wilson for the Intake porting and Mike at B3 racing for the rocker arm set up. The 3 of these folks can do some amazing things to parts and help you zero in on the...

    Intake Alignment Issues

I bought a new in the box Edelbrock 4bbl manifold to convert my RB over to MPFI. The manifold was significantly too wide. It wasn't really possible to see where the manifold ports were lining up on the head ports by looking down the intake flange. I applied some grease to the head flange along...

    Rear main seal lesson

You only really need to check the 2 bolts that go into the rear seal retaining bulkhead. Pull them and use a small wire to check and compare the depth of the holes vs the length of the bolts. Also, we both started using oil pan rail reinforcing plates as part of an effort to avoid distorting...

Spring pressure for hydraulic roller cam?

I tried going the hydraulic roller lifter route on my 493" RB. There is a delicate balancing act between having just the right spring pressure, having too much and having too little. Mopar hydraulic rollers are behind the curve compared to whats available for GM LS engines. I love those Indy...

    Rear main seal lesson

Good info above this post. I'll add that I clock the seal haves by maybe an 1/8" so the seal halves do not line up exactly with the cap parting line. I also clean the metal surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner prior to massaging the sealant into the metal to insure good adhesion between the...

Head and cam selection help for 440

If you keep the rpm down you should have a good running motor. I would contact Dwayne Porter for heads and cam selection to match your build. I have a buddy who struggled with detonation even though his specs were similar to what you have, so choose your combination wisely.

    BB oil pump leak

You can also order the gasket and O-rings to reseal the original pump, but installing a fresh pump is a better solution. Be sure to disassemble the new one, debur the parts and clean them. Some folks fill the new pumps with vasoline in place of priming them, but as mentioned above spinning it...

When to adjust valves? oil change? On recent motor.

I have about 1500 miles on my 493" motor after making some changes and freshening it up. Its had 3 oil and filter changes n that time. I also run a Jomar 100% no bypass oil filter on it, and nothing significant was in any of them after cutting them open. I've checked my valves 6 times since...

    Realistic valvetrain expectations.

Its almost foolish not to put a stroker set-up in that stout 400 block, especially for an injected street car. Hook that thing up to a 200R4 with a lock-up converter and you'll have a daily driver that can cruise on the freeway at speed.

    Problems installing new pushrods!

That doesn't sound right, so just to reiterate; all 16 of the lifter's internal pushrod cups should simply be pre-loaded .050" or there abouts from the retaining clip using the rocker arm adjusters. (make sure all the lifters can still spin freely in their bores when you put them in) The...

    Problems installing new pushrods!

In an effort to keep it simple and VERY accurate, consider this. *Confirm you put the lifters back into the exact same hole you pulled them out from. Kept them in order, so to speak. Use one of those small wire gauge measuring tools that some folks use to measure their welding tip orifices...

Wiped cam lobe = ported heads and roller

I went with the Isky Red-zone bushed rollers. They were not cheap, but so far so good. The bushings are pressure feed to the axle and the grooves on the lifters do not uncover the pressurized oil passages in the block/lifter bore. The benefit is supposed to be that they give you some warning...

    440 Source lightweight crank shaft

It's beautiful. Very impressed. People don't realize that some of the most modern, automated and efficient steel mills in the world are now in China. I would still have everything checked, measured and balanced before you throw one in a motor.

    440 Source lightweight crank shaft

I have been running one for over 7 years at or near the 700hp level. I like the quicker rev, and I'm hoping the lighter weight helps the stock block last. I had the motor apart to lower the compression and address some valve train instability issues I was having, and there was zero signs of cap...

    Fuel Pump

I am running a Fuel Labs low pressure 2-speed pump. Runs at low amperage until my secondary's are tipped in. I mounted a small micro switch on the throttle linkage to trigger the high speed flow. It's quiet and is mounted outside and near the top of the pump. Easy access if I ever have issues.

    440... Carb or Fuel Injection?

Let's talk about the reality of old tech versus new tech. I have both versions of old Mopars. A '68 A-Body with an EFI'd 408 AND a GM 200R4 overdrive with a high stall lock-up converter, and a '70 E-Body with a 493" 3 2bbl and a Passon 5 speed. The '68 is so much less of a finicky biatch to...

    440... Carb or Fuel Injection?

If you are going to shell out $1200 for a throttle body injection system, whey not spend $400 more and get a Pro-Flo 4, which is a full multi-point EFI system with intake, distributor, throttle body, harness and programmer? The other area not to avoid not spending a few extra bucks is to get a...

    milodon hi volume oil pump

I've been running one with the Milidon Road Race pan and Milidon Windage tray with a 1/2" pick-up and Hughes oiling system mods for about 3000 miles. I use the stock cast iron top on it with a Jomar 100% No-bypass filter. If the advertising is true, it seems to be a top-shelf combination. I did...

    Engine Install Question

Thanks for the quick response. I have two questions about it. Is it possible to mount the pick-up on the opposite side with a custom bracket? I have my "under alternator" A/C pump using up the bolts and space at that spot. Also, I would need to add a second pulley, and figure out if it needed...

    Engine Install Question

Andy, It's so cool to see your projects and hardware. I have a question about your EFI & COP Ignition components in place on the car. Can the same set-up be bolted onto a traditional, non-belt driven cam drive to upgrade to EFI? I mean using the stock water pump, timing cover, harmonic balancer...

    Engine Install Question

I made a simple bar with a bolt sticking up on each end to keep it from slipping. Lifted the car with my engine hoist using that. No need to disassemble the front clip or bumper. It was much easier than stuffing it in from the top like I had done for nearly 4 decades.

    Blowproof Bell Housing

Be sure to use a dial indicator to ensure the bell housing is BOTH square to the motor and the large hole is centered and aligned to the crank centerline. I had to use .010" & .020"shims to get my Lakewood square to the crankshaft (they look like thin hardened washers) and then offset dowels to...
