I Chose the 383 Big Block

I bought 2 used 383s because that's what was available for dirt cheap. Not disappointed at all. Aluminum heads and a tunnel ram, enjoy. This is the Big Block A Body Tech forum after all.

    Supporting the engine?

Don't forget, the engine has to tilt down a bit in the rear to get the trans in through the clutch into the pilot, at least mine did. I put down 2x8s and placed ramps on those to get the car higher and stable. Also put a bar in the back of the engine over the fenders with wood brackets I made...

383 won't clear the hood. I say get it done, don't need to be pretty.

Questions Regarding 383 Barracuda Engine Compartment

My understanding was when you find a 383 Barracuda you buy it, is this not the case? Btw, to turn, you rock it if it's manual steering with a 4 speed.

bb dart radiator identification/ fan shroud question

I have a 69 big block radiator in my 67. Those aluminum ebay radiators are good, I have one, might be US Radiators, don't recall. Iirc, Hayden 2947 low profile fan clutch, Derale 18" fan, stock rad, 180 stat, no shroud, no room for a shroud really. 383, zero temp issues. Did this years ago, I...

383 Broken exhaust stud please help!

I did this recently to both a broken exhaust bolt and valve cover bolt. Engine was out. Drilled a hole to give myself something to stick the mig weld wire into and drew out the weld until it was above the head. I screwed a bolt on to the hot weld, but not all the way, then welded the nut on...

    68 Cuda 383 vs a 360

I have a 383, no space issues, header issues, spark plug issues, clutch linkage z-bar issues, cooling issues, (manual) steering issues, suspension issues, weight issues, over/understeer issues, mental issues (that I'm aware of), or drivability issues. I spent as little as possible, the aluminum...

383 Help/Questions, Long Storage, Unknown Parts

You bet! I'll check the side play specs, oil the cam, and oil the cylinders, spin it by hand a bunch of times, and I'll have to leave the rest for after winter, blah. I have a 750, or is it an 850, Holley DP I can throw on it, and everything else to make it run. Since it's going in an old...

383 Help/Questions, Long Storage, Unknown Parts

I'll look for the side play specs, thank you. Never heard of copper rods, now I can brag about them, it's got copper rods man, all 8, I'm a winner! People will think I'm a moron, lol. I thought it looked lean. That is where the surfaces of the rod and cap are ground, correct? For what...

383 Help/Questions, Long Storage, Unknown Parts

68 383 HP with 906 heads. Picked this up and sold my other 383 because it appeared to be in better condition. Apparently it was in long term storage, a few years maybe, and was going to rebuild. Here goes: What's up with the white-ish valve color, on all of them? Why are the rods a rust color...

    187 Pan Removal

I tried that exactly, prying together with a pry bar, holding pliers between the nut and center link, couldn't get it to turn either way. I'll check the threads, maybe they were messed up when the nut was put on originally. I kept all the old parts when replaced, so I should have a boot and nut...

    187 Pan Removal

Thank you. Thought that as well, but I don't see the mark in the before pics and I've been under this car for a year and never noticed it. Of course I'll double check before install and modify if necessary, or use the original pan. Anyone know what's up with the joint?

    187 Pan Removal

So, the trans is out again, and I thought it was time to do the oil pan gasket. With the front end up already and the motor mounts unbolted, the engine crane didn't pull the engine up that much. It's up maybe a half inch on one side, but it lifted the bellhousing enough where I could remove the...

    No Mounts anymore?

I didn't think Schumacher manufactured mounts at all. Even going back 5, 10 years, I would call about mounts and they would tell me they were out of stock and don't expect to receive any until x date. I recall responding with a, I thought you made those in house? I definitely remember them...

Looking for advice, BB headers vs. HP manifolds

I didn't, I have a 67. OP stated he had a 69 Dart. Curious, is a bb swap into an earlier a-body supported by aftermarket parts, or stock parts?

Looking for advice, BB headers vs. HP manifolds

I have a 383 4 speed. Bought Schumacher headers new and at the time they sent them out to modify the left one for the stock Z bar. I have aluminum heads, and spark plugs are incredibly easy to get in and out. Socket, rachet, and one short extension for a few. Headers do not interfere with Z bar...

    tunnel ram and 750 eddys

This makes total sense to me, now. I ran two 390s, then 2 650s iirc, and although it ran extremely well, and even better with the 650s, it was a little rich. I never blocked off the PV though.

Ticking noise, 383, can't locate the source

Thank you. It took a long time to realize my childhood dream of a tunnel ram with a newspaper box scoop. Was told countless times it will never be streetable - wrong. This was the single best thread I ever started because I spoke to Mike, and hopefully with any luck, I'll have enough pennies...

Ticking noise, 383, can't locate the source

I had another thread, short version, one of the issues was dirt in the carb, suggested early on. Fast forward a while, followed another thread, screamed the same issue, I posted multiple times. It's hard to see the forest sometimes, even when you're hitting your head on the trees.

Ticking noise, 383, can't locate the source

I did, we were all correct, I'm a big dummy! Header gasket. The slightest, smallest, burn path thru a header gasket I've ever seen, in the most inaccessible place. Pointing straight down from the #3 cylinder, iirc. Left no exhaust mark, and couldn't see or feel it. That hose trick saved my...

    187 Pan Removal

Yeah, I plan on getting a gas line out there, insulation, etc. It should have been #1 on the list of auto related improvements, don't know what I was thinking. It wasn't so bad, but freezing cold tools, car, floor, everything, takes it's toll quickly. What a waste of half the year.

    187 Pan Removal

Oh, I agree 100%, you are a smartass, ha! Seriously though, I do agree. I've raised the engine countless times swapping motor mounts and headers. Did it no problem. My issue was the trans was out and the engine was supported with a steel bar across the fenders, wood and padding under it. I have...

    187 Pan Removal

Ok, all helpful. I think I'll make sure I can get to all the bolts, and if so remove them all. If for some reason the gasket is free, I don't see any harm in just wiping the surfaces down and replacing. If not, try to swing the CL out of the way and see if there is enough clearance. If not...
