My aching eyeballs after practicing FCAW.

A picture with the $400.00 Speed-Glass hood. Not much if any difference in the lens quality. This hood is not recommended for out of position welding IE. overhead using FCAW or SMAW. So it has now been regulated to my shop work and GTAW only.By the way I'm using a small Hobart 140 welder...

My aching eyeballs after practicing FCAW.

As posted above by Scott657, It is a a big event for your eyes when starting out, a lot of my new students like to concentrate on the light(arc) instead of watching the puddle. My saying is do not stare at the light like a moth is attracted to a light bulb, told to me by one of my old welding...

My aching eyeballs after practicing FCAW.

Hello Duggi, As stated above try a different hood preferably a name brand hood, IE Miller, Lincoln, Speedglass to name a few. Also FCAW burns hotter and brighter than GMAW. With that little machine, hood should be on a min of 10 if using variable shade. This is somewhat dependent on your eyes...

Have a TIG Welder? What are you using?

"No mention of the AHP 201XD? I have heard very good things about them other than the source. I plan on getting one. Hard to beat for $700" I had a student bring one into a class I was teaching. Surprisingly it welded pretty nice. Biggest complaints were the physical size of the machine, not...

Have a TIG Welder? What are you using?

I have almost the same machine as 67Dart273, was my go to machine for years, now delegated to only stick welding as I have a Thermal Arc 185 for TIG welding. Hopefully in the next couple of months where I teach welding, they are going to be getting new Miller Dynasty 400's and will be selling...

    Flux core wire?

dartfreak75 a couple of tips:1) If it has slag you drag as a rule of thumb. 2) If welding vertical and the material is less than 1/4" than you can run downhill, 1/4" and thicker you should run uphill with a slight push travel angle, when I say slight, pointing the gun straight in is 90 degrees...

    Flux core wire?

Great for observing not so much for welding, especially if welding out of position.

    Flux core wire?

RRR I have had a few hoods in my time... Miller, Jackson and Speed Glass(now 3M) I just replaced me original Speed Glass with the above mentioned hood after better than 20 years of service with only replacing the head gear once and the batteries several times. IMHO the Speed Glass is the best...

    Flux core wire?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005V49YA2/?tag=joeychgo-20 This is the hood I use, but is about 3 times the cost of the welder. Did not think as a hobby welder he would want to spend this much on a hood.

    Flux core wire?

I used one years ago that my neighbor had and he was having all kinds of issues with it. Most of it was wire related and his lack of skill. We changed the wire, I helped him dial it in with the limited controls he had and it served him just fine. Biggest issue, the wire was always hot, the...

    Flux core wire?

No, you probably could not get it wound on the spool properly. The 1lb spools from home depot are about 10-12 bucks if I recall and they will weld 10 times better than the HF stuff Kevin

    Flux core wire?

This would probably be the case. As for wire go with .030 as it is the smallest diameter flux core wire you can purchase and this machine only has 125 amps on its best day. You will run into the duty cycle with this welder. Buy the Lincoln 211 wire at either Home Depot or Lowes. By the way I'm a...
