    1972 318 need more power

Sounds like your on a budget. Easy and cheap is to shave your existing heads, maybe even up the valve size while your at it,and swap out the cam for something a little more agressive. Comp makes some good ones,as does Lunati. Also not mentioned so far is the "302" casting head. Used from...

    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

Wow very impressive. That torque just keeps a coming! And the h.p aint too shappy for such low compression. Best thing about it is it could be run on crap fuel all day long.

    Purple Cam Design Question

Rev kit's are designed to keep the roller lifter in full contact with the cam. Roller lifters can skid on start up,creating flat spots, and eventually failure. http://www.iskycams.com/pdfcatalog/2004-05/page21.pdf The rev kit also reduces the spring load at the valve. I like mopar cam's...

Lets talk big block con rods..

Thanks 72 scamptramp, for that ebay link! I just spent my savings on a set of hooker headers, brand new and never used, but lots of paint scratches for $75. Thier even a step up from bottom of the line, thier elite series. So Im out of cash. And yes,I prefer to deal cash or m/o... If I put...

    engine dyno prices???

Oh I totally agree about running the break in prior to installation. But I'll just bolt mine to something heavy so it dont fly off and break it in,lol. Seriously,I break em in on a stand or engine cradle. My eyes and ears have always been my most valuable trouble shooting tools.

Doesnt anyone test and tune on friday nights at the track anymore?

Lets talk big block con rods..

I have seen a few eagle failures is all. Im sure any rod can fail of course. Come to think of it,the failures were several years ago. So Im biased! One guy likes comp, another likes lunati etc etc.. There is a member here who is an engine builder, lives about 3 1/2 hours away and has...

Lets talk big block con rods..

I'll keep saving as the last batch of paw rods is likely gone. They do turn up from time to time on fleecebay. And here as well. I'm content to wait for the time being. And I do have my set, which I would do if I could get em done similar to the paw for the same cost. But a little guy likely...

I do plan to beat it to death at the track. Stage vi heads will breath well over 6000 rpm so why not? I'll just keep saving then,as Im not likely to get the funds transferred to paypal in time anyways. There's already only 2 sets of rods left on ebay. Yesterday there was 10! Thats the...

Lets talk big block con rods..

Thats what I figured too when I took more pics, lol. About 1/2 the rods are drilled in the centre and the other half are off a fair ways. But then I thought about it and the only real effect that might happen is you may get different lengths centre to centre. There isnt really that much load at...

Lets talk big block con rods..

Yes I am planning on using the stock LY in a 451 in combo with a nice light piston, but upon inspection my set looks pretty hammered, with many a pin end being off center. I agree that a better rod from anyone wont make more h.p,lol. I'll post up some clear pics of them and you guys can see...

Lets talk big block con rods..

I have a set of the old stand-by LY but need rebuilt. I'd use em if I thought it was cost effective to rebuild. So lets talk about aftermarket rods, who's the best and the worst. What are you using?

    Starting an old engine ....

Be very carefull when turning the motor by hand,as the rings may be frozen to the cyl wall and if forced they will break. I use a turkey baster and squirt a liberal amount of diesel in each cyl, then let it sit for a week. Then I use a pre oiling tool and prime the system. Then I carefully get it...

    400 BB build

I bought your book Andy and I must say it's good. It has a lot of the latest/greatest comonents covered and some great advise. As for a 400 build, for a mild street /bracket motor I'd use a cast crank to about 550 h.p and treat it like a really good breathing 383. It will have a slight edge...

    400 BB build

A word about pistons. Best to go forged if you throw turbo's at it. The hypers will hold up to NOS and the manufacturers claim at KB is that they will hold up to turbo's and nos if the right engine management is in place. Im building a 451 for my Dart and so far have a good start. The 451 is...

    Best flowing big block heads?

Id like to mention the mopar max wedge stage vi. Not the best ootb but great potential there to make 800 h.p. They can flow in the 390+cfm range on the intake.Definitely not cheap either but there are plenty of intakes and spacers these days for a B stroker and a few for an RB max wedge. The...

Does my 451 have to small of a cam?

Well if it's a .470 ish cam Id say it's more of a street cam than anything. Your shooting for 500 hp? Heads are limited to about 530-550 ish depending on the porter. I would think the heads would also hamper your 60 ft times somewhat unless you have steep gears and a hi stall tc.

Which Carb Gives a Balance of Power & MPG?

Heres my .02$; Edelbrock; Dont bother unless you want your car to reek like raw fuel all the time. Thermoquad.Dont bother unless you have spare parts and know what you are doing. I have 6 tq's but only run 1. Holley. Expect to tune it unless you get lucky.Prolly should buy a holley...

Stage V1 heads aluminum Good or bad????

Thats a good deal. New they run $1600/pair and thier bare, still need valves, shafts, rockers etc etc etc. And I'd say if they are regular port heads you just found the perfect head for a mostly street 451. I got a really good deal on my heads too,but they are bare, brand new plus I have to find...

Stage V1 heads aluminum Good or bad????

There are 7 different castings of that head and not all are created equal. Are you looking at the max wedge port version, straight or angle plug, big or small combustion chamber? They can be had with as small as 75 cc chamber or up to 96?cc. They have one of the highest potentials out of the...

The Dart runs better than ever

Totally agree. It's a bandaid solution. Congrats on fixing the problem! Most times when people have idle issues they look at the carb first. Im weird and look at electrical.
