Make sure you chock the wheels if your doing it on the ground. Though the easiest way to get it to release is to rock the car while wrenching on the lever bolts.

Usually happens when its jammed between 1st & reverse. Does the car move at all when you release the clutch?

Did you check your clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing? Is there any adjustment left on your cluth?

Did you check that 3&4 and Rev Levers were not also engaged?

It's been a long time for me with a 4 speed but I use to use Hays only!!

Does the car move or is it hung up between two gears? Also is/was your shifter any good or did it have problems? You said you tried to move the shifter. Did you try to move the linkage rods and levers also?

Did you recheck your drive shaft to yoke connection?
